Henry all-weather 45/70 thoughts?

Don't have the Henry, but I've got the Winchester 1886 and the Marlin 1895 chambered in 45-70.

I'm sure the Henry functions fine and will shoot straight enough, but I think you will get annoyed that it doesn't have a loading gate and must be loaded through the tube.

I really like these, but not at that price. This will sound dumb, but give me either rifle except threaded for a can. Would be awesome if they could figure out a good way to run supersonic rifle rounds or subsonic pistol rounds through the guns with a simple part swap. 45acp rocking along out of a suppressed lever gun would be awesome.

I might have thought about one, until I saw the price! I don't need an all weather lever action .30-30 or .45-70 that much!

They are available for quite a bit less than MSRP, I have one bookmarked at $730 shipped. That's less than a comparable, current production Marlin 1895SBL. Not saying it's worth $730 either, but it's competitive. The only other comparison I can see is a pre-Rem stainless Marlin Guide Gun; I've never seen one of those on the shelf for $730.

I too prefer a loading gate, but in reality, it make little difference. Henry is using Cerakote vice real stainless. They are also using a cheap hardwood stock. With those complaints out of the way, I will say that I like them. I am interested in hearing about how well they shoot.

No way, not at those prices. If you shop around you can find a SS 1895 for cheaper, I bought mine for $600. Its not even stainless steel and they are using a cheap wood stock either stained or painted black. For my money I would pick up a Marlin.

Hard chromed, not stainless.

The "cheap wood" is selected to be covered with a waterproof coating as part of the all-weather package. This is not a stain & it's not a cheap paint.
No need for walnut that's not going to be seen, and the wood used is strong enough to do its job.

It's not built to look nice, it's built to resist bad weather & it does that.

If you like a Henry that can handle rain & snow, this is it.
If you don't, there are other choices.

Well I would be interested to know what their "coating" is. Per their website it is a " a durable industrial-grade coating" which really doesn't tell you much. Later on in their description of the rifle they note that their stock for this rifle is "stained hardwood". So it is stained with some kind of coating. In the photo you can even see shades of brown wood beneath the black.

No offense intended to anyone. I'm just of the opinion that a SS Marlin would be a better choice. I know this thread is about the Henry.

My point was that it goes beyond just staining the wood. :)
Call Henry & ask for more detail on the coating.

I handled a few of their .45-70's when they first came out. I was very impressed with the fit/finish, and their smooth action. Much smoother than a Marlin. I'll bet Walmart will order you one for much cheaper than sticker price.

CaptTrips, I already have a stainless pre-Rem Marlin 1895 GG I converted to pistol grip. I just like to carry a backup :)

If they want an all weather rifle they have it backwards. SS offers very little advantage over blue. SS is a little easier to keep clean, but anything corrosion related that will cause one to fail will cause the other to fail. Most of the internal parts in any SS gun are not SS and those are the ones where you really need to prevent rust.

A wood stock however can go bad with little or no warning. Coating the outside of wood does nothing to prevent the moisture trapped inside the wood from expanding and contracting as atmospheric conditions and altitude change. This is what does the damage, not so much external water getting inside. A true bad weather gun needs a synthetic stock. Even laminated wood is only marginally better. The SS metal is far less important other than for aesthetics.
