I'm looking to get a lever action 22, just to plink mostly at the indoor range (25 yrds) I belong to. Heard good things about Henry and the H001 looks like it would fill the bill without breaking the bank. Going price in my neck of the woods is $350 NIB. I will have to replace the sights with HI VIZ to accommodate my 73 yr old eyes. Any comments/recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Triplebike...what's your stance on Zamak? I ask because you're going to hear it mentioned ...A LOT....in the upcoming replies. I have one from the first year they came out. Like it. Does what I wanted it to do (getting my youngest daughter familiar with shooting). Hasn't seen much use in 20 years since.

I have the H001, like it, no problems so far. I actually bought it for my granddaughter who doesn't know it yet. If I were getting it for me, I'd probably get the H001T , Frontier, or Golden Boy.

I have a Henry .22 lever. Zamak---No problem. Have a couple thousand rounds through it. Functions and shoots great. Older eyes (78yrs), so I skipped the Hi-Viz
sights and went to a scope.

Zamak / Samak doesn't faze me (LOL) It's a 22 don't think it'll blow apart and I don't have any trips planned for the rain forest. I'm told that Henry's warrenty is excellent and from what I've researched they acually give a crap about the customers purchasing their products.

All of the Henry’s I own have treated me well. Never used customer service so can’t comment on that.

Take a look at the new Winchester .22 Lever rifle thread currently up and running on this site. Might interest you. It’s in the same price range as our Henry’s.

After some tinkering mine works well. As purchased the from sight was too low. It would not zero at 25 or 50 yards. It was about 4” high, which is great for a 6 o’clock hold on an 8” bullseye but not much else.

I called Henry and they sent a new front barrel band/sight. One screw and a little file work to bring the front sight down to zero with my chosen ammo and I was in business. It was actually an entertaining project but I’m the only one I’ve heard of having to do it.

The front sight is part of the barrel band so you can’t just swap it out. The rear sight has a set screw and is dovetailed like normal.

Mine likes Aguila and Federal Automatch but it will run anything. For an indoor range at 25 yards some CB or Quiet low velocity rounds might be in order. Benched at 50 yards with my test scope it will shoot an inch or slightly more depending on which ammo.

I have a couple Henry .22 lever rifles and they are fun! I did have an issue with one that all of a sudden had an issue with the barrel crown and started shooting poorly. Called Henry. I had a new barrel installed and the gun back to me in under 3 weeks. Great service!

Say WHAAAT?! When did that happen? Thats awesome. I've not had mine that long, maybe since 2019.

I did check out that thread, thank you. Not a bad looking rifle. It's nice to see that lever actions are on the rise in popularity. I am very impressed with Henry's attitude toward it's customers, our heroes and the country, which makes me lean toward the Henry.

I think the brass .22s feel better than the plain ones. Bought my brother a plain .22 Henry, just didn't feel as nice as my Golden Boy. But GBs require removing the rear sight and getting a different mount. The plain had a dovetail mount already. I've seen GBs for about the same price at Wal-Mart if you can find one

I bought a Henry 22 mag a few months ago and love it. And it shoots very accurately. Well enough to hit turtles at 50 yards off hand. And all you see is their heads. Do some looking here for a poser named DPris. He has since passed away but did write a nice review on the Henry 22lr and said he shot over 20,000 rounds before he had a small part break that was easily repaired. He was also a professional gun writer IIRC so I trust his opinion.

OK found it. Read post #39.

I have three Henry rimfire levers; a standard H001, the standard youth model with the shorter barrel/stock and a standard . 22 WMR rifle.

Great guns for the price, IMHO. Slick actions and easy handling make them fun for me to shoot, plus the ease of mounting a Skinner peep on the WMR receiver was a real plus (or a scope/red dot if so inclined.) I didn’t even need to fiddle with the rear sight (Unlike my Marlin 39A Golden Mountie. Adding a peep to the 39A required swapping the factory rear sight out and replacing it with a folding unit.)

I also did a Skinner ghost ring peep on the youth rifle that replaced the rear sight, and that required a hi-viz front sight to replace the original (Mine is the older style barrel band-sight combo).

Between the Henry H001, my Marlin 39A and my Browning BL-22 Micro Midas, the Henry feels better and functions smoother while shooting pretty well to boot. (The Marlin is a darn accurate .22 and the BL-22 is scoped so thats cheating. ;)

Let us know what you think when you get one and take it out to go play. :D

Stay safe.

Ran another 100 rounds through my GB at the indoor range yesterday. I will say one thing I like about the Golden Boy over the blued model is it has more drop in the stock and makes it hang nicely😁 I’ve ran several bricks of ammo through this rifle with no malfunctions of any kind. I’m very happy with it IMG_1409.jpeg

The little "Henry" is a fine plinking tool. But, all Henry .22 rifles are made of Zamak V pot metal, a zinc alloy with a low melt point used for injection molding becasue it is cheap and easy to work with. The "brass" rifles is also Zamak V with a faux brass plating and the base rifles use a black painted cover over the Zamak V receiver.

There is a new release for Winchester, a new .22 lever rifle. It has a forged aluminum billet receiver. Unfortunately I think the rifle is imported for Winchester. The Browning has a steel receiver as does the (NLA) Marlin 39A and (NLA) Winchester 9422.

When "Henry" makes their rifle with a brass or steel or even a machined aluminum forging I will purchase one. Ordinace brass for mine please. I cannot do the Zamak. But I have two 39As and one 9422M so I am not in a panic, I can wait. The little Henry is a reworked Ithaca. That are not bad rifles but they are sold to people as being brass and steel and instead they are injection molded zinc alloy with a thin sheetmetal cover.

I have 4 Henry .22 rifles. I have never had a problem with any of them. I bought my first one in 1999, an H001 classic. I put a scope on it for the grand kids to shoot and it has had 1000''s of rounds put through it.
I also have the H001 carbine that I put Williams fire sights on (for my old eyes). I have the H004 Golden Boy and I replaced the buckhorn rear sight with a Skinner dovetail peep sight (very pleased with this peep sight). My 4th Henry is the .22 Magnum Frontier model with an octagon barrel. I have a scope on it and it has been a good varmint rifle.

I can't say I see the problem with Zamak. It's a cost saving measure, sure, but this makes them a rifle I can pick up without feeling guilty about running 1000's of rounds through it.

Yep the Zamak 5 is a less expensive material to work with and would not be suitable for high recoil guns. But for the guns it is used in it works just fine and helps make the guns more affordable. And if you manage to shoot your Henry enough to wear it out then I am sure Henry will send you a new gun. Good luck wearing one out. Be glad you get to shoot that much and have enough disposable cash to buy the ammo needed to wear one out.

Yes I would rather have a Winchester with a steel receiver. First I can't justify the cost for a used one and second it won't do anything my Henry won't do. I have a Marlin 39a made around 1988 IIRC and it is one fine gun that shoots like a target rifle. It shoots little bitty groups with the ammo it likes and thats why it has a scope on it to take advantage of the accuracy it offers. But its heavy compared to the Henry. I like how easy the Henry is to carry and how easy it rest on your shoulder with a sling.

If I run across a deal on an older Winchester you can be sure I will buy it. But I won't get rid of my Henry.
