Heretic time. I don't own an AR am I the only one?

Another long time non-owner.

I think some of it is a prejudice against the original M16.

I also think I'd be more likely to get something in 7.62x39 than a .223

I did have a friend who switched from .308 to .223, but that was due to a severe hand injury that made the .308 painful for him to shoot. So I admit they have their uses, but they not my cup of tea.

If I could afford one of them with the burst fire switch ...
Maybe someday but the pricing has to come back to earth for me to take on a different caliber at this time.

Well, the semi-auto variety prices have come back down to "normal". I see them in gun stores and internet stores for below retail price now.

The burst fire? I can't even think of the money that would cost.

spottedpony's error is in the assumption of a lack of practicality for private ownership. They are quite practical for plinking for pleasure and for hunting--and that's about as practical as you can get. They work well for home defense, so there's another practical use.

But, if folks figure they can be happy plinking, hunting or defending with something else, hey, more power to them! :D

:D Exactly Art.

All types and sorts have their place. We're in a pretty unique situation, to have so many choices in arms to use and enjoy.

The -14's have a soul - an AR will never have a soul!

I, too, carried an issued M16 for 7 years. I realize the practical nature of the system, but its the old surplus bolts that I enjoy the most.

I still have the folding Mini 14 for social services but it's the last thing I grab for a relaxing range day. Not the tack driving standard that most AR guys want but shoots minute of hostile torso any day.

I couldn't stand the AR 'platform' either thanks to my Time In Service... until I was out and finally built my own. Now I realize it's really a great 'modular' design and am saving up for a 6.8 spc II upper.

I don't fault anyone for not liking it though.

I used a M16 in my Vietnam adventure. I really don't like the rifle, so I don't own one. I may buy one just because.....chris3

I have never owned one. I also own no AKs or Glocks. While I do have several firearms dedicated to home defense, shooting is more about fun for me. I have never held an AR, AK or Glock that spoke to me. They just don't do it for me like my revolvers and lever-actions.

Having said that, I think they are great for the sport. More shooters seem to be drawn in by them than other rifles so, more power to them.

^^^Pretty much what schwing said. I don't plan on buying either a Glock or an AR unless people (at the state level, mind, we saw how national worked out) start telling me that I soon won't be able to, at which point I will.

Every year at the gun show, I look at the ARs and think "I'd like one". I carried an M-16 daily for many years in the USAF Security Forces. Qualified as an "expert" marksman every year. Always liked taking them apart and putting them back together. But then I start thinking about what I would actually USE it for, and realize that I don't really have a use for one, and I forget about it again until the next gun show.

Like the O.P. I really like lever action rifles and believe the 30-30 is a very useful round.

However the last two years have been very difficult for my family and myself for economic reasons. In addition due to several other factors I started to become a small time prepper. So I have decided a AR has a place in my gun safe. But, not being a real big fan of the AR I have been taking a hard look at cost vs. quality. As prices seem to be dropping and dealer inventories building back up at some point when a good enough deal comes along I'll probably add one.

Two firearms I consider essential are a AR or AK and blackpowder for a real prepper. :uhoh:

I can't see myself buying one soon.

Not wild about the looks, ergonomically they don't feel good for me and they don't fit my current shooting profile, which does evolve however.

Think I got my fill of AK's / SKS / RPK's / PKM's / DP's / R4's / FAL's / G3's etc. while in the bush wars in Southern Africa. If I had a free choice I would tend to be old school and would be hard pressed to choose between an AK / RPK and a FAL.

Times change and one never can tell, but for now there are many other firearms that would get priority over an AR.

Provocative thread; I carried an M16A1 nearly 30 yrs ago-can't believe it has been that long ago. That thing would jam if the slightest dirt got into it. I like my Garand and FN-49. Currently saving for a PTR/G3 style rifle. The AR class would be good for my daughters and wife. Might pick one up just because it would be cheaper to reload and play with. Just my 2 cents

I do not have one either.
I don't really desire one, though I wouldn't be opposed to a gas piston version. SR556 comes to mind.

Closest I'll get is an AR70 or ARX160 (yeah, I'm a fan of Beretta rifles :D). Maybe a BRNO CZ805 if our import-regs ever get their act together. 223 is just such a little round, and the guns that shoot are just all so boring ;). And anyone familiar with the design/operation of the AR soon won't see anything but compromises everywhere.

m1dbob1944, amen on the FN49 --too good for the War :D

The pistol grip always seemed wrong to me. I'm happy with my Mini 14's, which can easily be bought and made more accurate than me for less than a basic AR.

I always figured I would never own one. Never have liked the look, the round they shoot is anemic compared to the other things I shoot, and I never liked dealing with mags. But, the second time BHO got elected it did strange things to my head. I drank the coolade and bought a Ruger 556 in 6.8 spc. I have to say at first I only had it just to have it, but I have grown to enjoy it. Its heavy, but I like the little 6.8 cartridge, and even more importantly my wife will actually shoot it. I know its not a classic AR in the strictest sence, but close enough. I still love my Garand more though.
