The AR platform....the fans...I don't get it. (all brand fans I guess)

I just don't get it.

I really didn't need to read beyond that.

If you don't want to be part of this crowd, then don't be. But you're certainly not making friends or doing yourself any favors by scoffing at us. Ain't gonna change our minds about the platform, but you will invalidate your input in any discussion concerning it around here if you squawk like this much.

I just don't get it. Yes I own one....just one, and I have owned it for over 30 years. Colt HBAR. It shoots fine, works fine....but I just don't get the rabid....and many are rabid fans.

The magazine thread brought this up....I don't get why a product would be discounted if it did not have an AR magazine. The same goes to Glock fans....I don't get it. We have them (glocks) at work and it is just a claw hammer....nothing special....no more reliable then any other pistol (of the same quality).

But the AR guys seem to go well past all that, they decide that a hot rod 22 is not enough, so they start changing things to make them bigger....not accurate enough different "upper" again...not good for that, change this....visit the barbie catalog and start to hang all manner of garbage on the side of a gun.

If this is your hobby...fine, I get that....at one time I raced cars....I have the almost 6 figures in my race car....money down the drain and spent in a really stupid manner to some...ok I get that...but again the AR guys go past this.

If it is not an AR we move past it....if it does not take an AR magazine.....just read the comments in the ar thread....just makes me go wow...you really are a rabid fanboi.

It reminds me of a saying.

I don't mind Religion....it is the fan club members that get too worked up.

I guess I would be a "rabid" fan by your definition, as you seem to think anyone who owns anything more than one basic AR is somehow a "rabid" fan. I own three ARs currently, which isn't really excessive considering I have three 590 shotguns for various uses, as well as three mosins just because, and probably two or three other things for no apparent reason whatsoever. All things considered, I think I've shown great restraint, especially considering I have access to cheap parts and the gun nut equivalent of Santa's workshop.:D

On the other hand, I've met rabid AK and M14 fans, and even some rabid FAL fans. Especially the AK people. They're so rabid they won't even touch a nasty AR for fear of being instantly contaminated with whatever disease they think ARs are carrying.

I find most AR enthusiasts are pragmatic and generally well informed, or at least have the capacity to be objective and reasonable. If you shoot an AR compared to just about any other platform, it's pretty undeniable that they're the most pleasant guns in their class. The ergonomics are top notch, especially with the more modern configurations, and they're just silky smooth.

I collect and enjoy shooting a wide variety of firearms, but when it comes down to performance the AR is just the natural choice. If it's just fun range day, bring on the AKs and whatnot, but if it's an endurance test like a class or just training then the AR is going to be the more comfortable gun to shoot that's going to cause the least amount of fatigue to the shooter. If I had to shoot all day every day, I can't think of anything else I'd rather shoot than an AR.

As for the magazines, that's one aspect of the AR I'm not a huge fan of. KAC has a continuous curve mag that makes a lot more sense, but NATO has tentatively standardized the AR mag so anything up for military use, like the SCAR, is going to be required to use "STANAG" mags.

As for hanging things on them, most people have an optic and a weapon light, and perhaps some kind of forward grip. I don't see how that's in any way unreasonable. These things apply to any other gun this day and age. It doesn't get crazy until we start talking about military use, which is going to necessitate night vision equipment in many cases.

Ooooh grandpa, please, you are really saying "the fanboys of the thing I like are totally reasonable, and the fanboys of the things I don't like (as much) are just crazy".

I invite you to browse some the forums on some other gun websites. You are likely to find some very mis-informed people, some of whom are quite big fans of the AR platform.

To the OP's point:
In comparison to other hobbies, modding an AR (or a Glock, 1911, AK, or most guns) is a relatively inexpensive hobby in terms of dollars (compared to some hobbies) and of course it's human nature, once you have invested time and money and personalized something, for one to like it - perhaps even past the point of rationality.

I will happily read the OP's comments, on the AR or any other platform, regardless.

There is one terrible dirty little secret about AR's I will disclose to the haters, they breed. Yep. Don't know how. There's another one in my 'hobby' room doing it now. Inexpensive lowers and all these dog gone sales are mostly to blame. And another thing partially to blame is all these dog gone caliber choices. Oh, well. Rest of the parts will be in this week. Guess I'll have to endure the fun of whatever the 6.5 Grendle brings. No one should have to put up with as many of these horrible things in so many configurations as I do. Ah, and it will add more horror to the reloading addiction. But let's not get the reloading fan boys started. Would rather smack a hornets nest than open that can worms.

I have no problem with people being fans of firearms I don't have any interest in. I do have a problem if they keep at me nonstop to buy their favorite firearm that I have no interest in.

Why do we waste so much energy worrying about what other people do with their time and money? People like all manner of things I don't understand. That's fine. As long as it is legal and safe I honestly don't care. I don't see the point of leaving this open as no position will change and nothing good will come from arguing over what is or is not great.
