Heretic time. I don't own an AR am I the only one?

ARs are fun that I can attest to. They are fun to put together, take apart, and shoot. They feel good to hold and rewarded me with incredible accuracy when I did my part.

Nope. You aren't the only one. Neither do I own one, nor do I hope to own one, I just don't like them. AR15 is like licorice: not everybody likes licorice. But those who do like licorice, REALLY like licorice. :)
That is a pretty apt comparison. I don't own an AR-15 either. I was looking at one of the civilian M4's (Colt) just today at Walmart. I may just pull the trigger.... ?

Handloader just sent out the new issue and it is all about AR's. I flipped through it and then tossed it in the bin as I don't own and AR. Don't really have the desire to buy one and I don't load for any of the calibers listed including 223.

Am I the only one out there that does not own an AR?

I just don't like chasing my brass around. It is bad enough with my M1A's but the little 223 brass is small and goes a ways. Its not like I don't have autoloaders. I have have several M1A's and M1 Carbines but no AR's.

I understand they can be accurate, I understand you can change anything about them and I know folks seem to love them at the range. I have shot them and yes they are fine shooters but given the choice I would buy a good 30/30 Winchester over an AR or maybe another Ruger #1.

So to all of the other heretics out there who don't own AR's, come ye, come ye, congregate and tell us your reasons for not partaking with the holy AR bandwagon.
No. At this time I own ZERO rifles.

No AR

I don't own an AR and likely never will, I own several rifles. I like my high powered rifles with real power. If I want to shoot a .22 I'll shoot my Remington .22 rimfire. For a house gun I think a shotgun is a superior weapon and much less expensive.
I had a Ruger mini 14, I don't miss it a bit.

I don't like alligators. I don't own one and don't want one. I try to stay away from alligator forums because they don't really care that I don't like what they like. Savy? :neener:

No problem Peter.

I'm one that has no use for an AR, and really don't intend to buy one in the future either.

This is coming from a guy who uses them at work quite a lot, and has owned them in the past.

Ironically, I have a few M14 types and M1 Carbines as well, and consider mine to be better than any AR currently to be had or built.

Others may agree or not, but what matters most is what the individual likes and dislikes.

I prefer how the controls are laid out for the M14/M1 Carbine over that of an AR, and prefer the gas piston design over direct impingement.

There is absolutely nothing an AR can do for me that my M14S or M1A-A1 doesn't do for me now, but there were things the AR could not match........so I sold them off when the time for selling rifles like these were optimum.

If I wanna black rifle, I'll simply paint an M14 stock black and call it a day.;)

i dont own an ar either, i had one of the older model mini 14 a couple years ago and sold it. i recently bought one of the newer mini 14 and its still in the test phase. this one is a little more accurate than the old model , ive gotten 2 in groups with ultramax 55 gr fmj at 100 yrds from sand bags. fed with 55 gr blitz 3 and a half and 4 in groups. hornady ammo with 55gr v max 3 in groups. one thing i did notice is the barrel heats up quick and ya need to wait a good bit between shots with the action open when the barrel heats up otherwise you will be spraying bullets all over. i am in the process of reloading for it , just waiting to get components/lol,, could be a little more accurate if ruger wouldnt put such a garbage trigger on it(creepy and gritty), they have better triggers on their 22`s that cost way less. i have a burris 3x9x40 fullfield 2 mounted with the rail that comes with the gun and some aluminum rings i had. couldnt use the factory steel rings it came with cuz the rear ring had 2 screws cross threaded in it and i broke the torx wrench just trying to get them out. the holes on the black rail i used diddnt line up with the rear hole very well and was hard to get the screw started even with all the others loose. on the pluss side ,,with the rail supplied and med rings i had about 1/8 th in gap between the scope and hand guard. the ruger factory med rings sit a little too high for my taste.

I can't bring myself to an AR spot. I respect their symbolism, and for someone who LOVES "light, fast, useful" (scout-style), I should adore them, as they really make the PERFECT scout-rifle.

When holding them in the store, I love the ergos - the mag release and safety are in the perfect spot for me. Their balance isn't bad, and their weight is nice and light.

However, once I pull that "tik-tok" trigger, and feel the "sha-shooonk" of the recoil spring, and I'm still feeling movement in it WELL after the bullet has left, I lose interest. I'm sure if I spent a whole boatload of money on an upper of a different cal, and tuned the recoil spring, and altered the gas-block to optimize the action, then reinforced the bolt and added a different buffer and...yeah, you get the idea.

On AR-10's, if I want a .308 SA, I'll take a FAL or a BAR for the same $$ as a GOOD AR-10.

Surprising to me how many "na I don't like them" posts are here considering everytime I open THR there are 8-10 new AR threads.

This seems to be the AR bashing thread...

What's funny to me is that while many here do not prefer an AR15 rifle and do not see a need for one, it is still the most widely used small arm by the Military and LEA's.

The Purist In Me

I like my martinis chilled and strained straight up with an olive. I like my rifles with walnut stocks, preferably American or Black Walnut. I want my gun to look like a gun.

I have several and I love them. My Dad (and firearms instructor) hated them. He carried an M14 in the Corps and never trusted the M16. They had a lot of problems but they got fixed. But, he still hates them!! LOL

I don't have one. I've posted before on this, Uncle Sam loaned me one a number of years ago, I gave it back and moved on.

With that said, if I were to come across a decent AR-10 chambered 308, I'd think long and hard about it...

Just walked into the Anniston CMP last Saturday (first CMP visit, and they were mostly cleaned out). They might not have any Service Grades on the racks for a long time. This Service Grade Special now at home is It.

An AR would never have any appeal (to me) that could begin to compare with that of classic rifles. But at least AR owners don't worry about scraping, denting a gun surrounded by plastic.
