I have a few low calibre handguns, but there have been some serious break-ins around my neighborhood lately. Not thinking I am all that secure with a .38 spl airweight revolver, and my shotgun just isn't always handy.

I would feel at home with a 9 mm that has the option for a reliable high capacity magazine. I would want +P JHP compatibility. What are the best options ?

My preferences, with the top 2 being almost a tie:

Smith & Wesson M&P9 - 17+1 and +P compatable. Also has Pic. rail if you want to go with a light.

Springfield XD - 17+1, *I think* +P compatable. Pic rail.

Taurus 24/7 - 17+1. Not sure about +P. My brother really liked his. I liked its grip, but prefer my M&P's trigger.

Ruger SR9 - 17+1. While the "new kid on the block," it's now been out for a year. An early trigger issue is being resolved and folks seem to like this pistol.

Taurus PT92 - 17+1, +P compatable. All steel gun lends heft to it.

Taurus PT111 ("Millennium Pro") - if you want a smaller size gun that still has good capacity. Note, not a "pocket gun" but certainly not a full-size service pistol like the others I list here.

Used German police Sig P6s, Glocks, and Ruger P-series also would make good SD guns.

This is one of those "you need to go handle & see for yourself" things.

Q

I thought it was possible to get 30 round mags for some 9mm pistols?

I personally would be very leery of after market 30 round mags. They tend to be made by manufcturers with less than stellar reputations (e.g promag). Mecgar makes high quality extended capacity mags in the 20 round range.

Glock 19/17... Glock has factory 30rd mags that are 100% reliable. I have a 19 that goes everywhere with me and a 17 that never leaves the night stand.

Nothing is 100% but the Glock mags do have a good reputation.

My personal choice is the M&P 9mm. My wife has one and it is a terrific shooter. Much better than any Glock I've shot. It is very accurate, fits your hand nicely, reliable, and is very easy to shoot well.

For a HD handgun, I like big and heavy. As such the following would be perfect: CZ75, Beretta 92, Taurus, Ruger , and I'm sure a few others. My 16rd CZ75 BD is a perfect HD gun.

I like the XD. Mine is stone reliable. I also have the Taurus PT111. It has that wacky safety on it though. Just gotta be careful with it. I like the size and feel, but it is not 100% reliable. I wouldn't use it for HD.

To each his own but, do you really think you'll need a 30 round mag in your HD gun? If you do think you'll need that much you could always keep an extra mag next to your pistol. As for the gun, I love my XD9 it's been really reliable and very accurate.
