I bought a "Hi-Point" 9mm at the local gun show.. I was just wondering if anyone knew alot about that type of brand, Is it a reliable brand, and a good gun?

Great... this should be interesting.

Everyone under the sun knows about Hi-Points, especially if they have never shot one. You will learn what I mean.

As reliable as any gun. In my opinion.

I think they are a great gun, but the vast majority of folks who respond to this thread will a) acknowledge that the guns are reliable, b) the company as a no questions as guarantee and c) the guns are accurate. This has even been tested by one of the sites moderators in a competitive environment...

But... the same people will say they would never own one because they are "ugly"

Good choice, if you ever get shamed into selling it PM me because I have one and it is dead on accurate and reliable. I would buy another in a second.

nice cheap autoloader. Domestic production, simple blowback action, reliable, personal experience with the cust serv is top-notch. enjoy :D

I own the c9 and the JHP 45, love them both and they haven't missed a beat. They are ugly as all get out and heavy as a load of bricks, but I don't think you could find a better gun for the money. Now, I have a Glock 27, xd 40, Ruger LCR and a Ruger MKII, these guns are superior by far, but I still love the Hi Points....

Search and see what happens when this can of worms is opened, that's the results from page one (of who knows how many) of the results when I searched thread titles only for hi-point.

Impulse buying is fun, and at the HP price, beat the crap out of it and do your own reliability testing ... why not?

I put a magazineful through a 9mm Hi-Point carbine. It looked like it fell out an ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down, but it fed, fired and shucked every round and put the bullets where I wanted them to go. I have no experience with the pistols. I will give my standard advice that they are OK if you need a handgun right now and ~$150 or so is absolutely all you have, but for little over a C-note more, you can get something like a Ruger P95 or S&W Sigma, at the low end of "first quality" handguns.

A buddy has their 9mm rifle and has excellent customer service from their
factory ( Dayton, Ohio I think ). They have a lifetime warranty on their guns
and will ship parts with no questions.

Although, it's no Glock... ;)

I own one of the 45's, very reliable. I'd venture it's the most affordable, reliable 9mm in it's class. Before everyone flames me, what 9mm is more reliable, durable, etc. at the price point of a hi-point? The guarantee is awesome as well. I always keep an eye open for a used one at the gun shows.

They're ok pistols once broken in. I had a few problem with mine until I left the mags sit for a week loaded. It also doesn't eat steel cased ammo very well. In the accuracy department, it sure isn't my 5946 or 5906 TSW but then again, it's only $150. It's probably one of the best low-cost firearms out there. I bought mine as an experiment and it proved itself.

You can always save up "a little more" for the next level up but if it's all one can afford, it is an ok choice as long as you let the mags sit loaded for a week or two.

As stated in post #11, make sure to shoot the gun a lot prior to keeping it
for your Self-Defense weapon.

I always completely take a gun apart prior to shooting as well. So many
manufacturers over lubricate and coat parts in Cosmoline. The last gun I
bought new took me over two hours to cleanup.

the C9 was my first handgun. it has seen THOUSANDS of rounds, been dropped in the sand in arizona, the snow in washington and is still going. it was also a gun i carried concealed for a few weeks until i got a Sigma 40.

shoot it, and enjoy it. heck my 995 rifle has over 40,000 rounds since the last clean or oil and its still going.

Simply put...... the best $150.00 I ever spent on a gun, when I bought that ugly 9mm. Exceeded my expectations. I will definately get another flavor in the future.

I would never buy a Hi Point for the same reason I won't ever buy a Glock. Because I've got aesthetic standards....

Up this way we shoot for sport only since carry and even home defense with a handgun or any gun is pretty much a non starter given how the laws are written. If I'm going to use a gun as a piece of sporting equipment then I'm darn well going to get something that doesn't make me nauseous to look at. And this is nothing at all against the HP or Glock. I just don't like the looks of either of them. Haven't shot a Hi Point but I've shot some Glocks and do well with them. I just don't like the look and feel of them.

I am glad I have enough money and guns that I don't have to buy one of those for my mother or daughter.
Beyond that I guess they are fine.

Good glovebox gun.... No big loss if stolen.

Bingo!!! I've owned a C9 for 12 years now. It is a fairly reliable gun, but they are notorious for being ammo sensitive. My C9 is no different. I own a gun safe which houses all of my long and hand guns except the C9. It stays out in my tool box. It doesn't get invited to the range or is allowed to stay by the bed for HD. It is what it is...an inexpensive gun that will fire if it has the right ammo loaded in it. The life time no-questions-asked warranty is one of the best in the industry though...

I bet you 10 Internet bucks you can fine more "My Kimber is having issues" threads than you can "My Hi Point is having issues or sux" threads. Go ahead, Search, Ill wait.

What's that you say? You cant find hardly any threads about Hi Points having issues?
Now look at this page and the last 5 previous ones and count the "Kimber issues" threads just on 5 pages.

What? That many!? Really.....whooda thunk it?
I don't dislike Kimber but everyone picks on them so i figured why let up now.

To get serious now what i said above is true sadly, But Kimber does make a good gun far as im concerned. I dont own one, But you guys only have yourselves to blame for that.

But the thing about a HP is if you have issues you send it in on their dime and they fix it no questions asked. Run it over with a dump truck and your cat pees on it? Send it in and get a new one!
Just don't try and use it as a CCW gun, That i wouldn't due to its weight. But if yours passes the reliability tests i could care less about carrying it if its reliable.
Its concealed anyhow so no one will see it.
Plus when you run out of bullets you can use it as a hammer to build forte and hopefully he cant shoot threw it.

I don't own and probably never will own a HiPoint.

I do find it frustrating that any members of a RTKBA crowd seem so willing to cast dispersion on a company that provides, from what I have gathered, are relatively reliable firearms with top notch customer service and a lifetime warranty at such a low price, because this may be some peoples' only option if they want to buy a new firearm to defend their life and property.

Somehow, I don't see it as a great development for us in the RTKBA crowd to create an atmosphere where some people who may be on a tight budget, and who, ironically, may live in a very rough neighborhood where threats to their safety are far more frequent, are discouraged from purchasing a tool that could save their lives and that of their family members, because the tool they can afford isn't to others' nuanced liking.
