Hi-point or Nagant revolver?

There will often be some kind of marking on a PD trade in.
Otherwise, you can ask the store owner or check and see if the shop in question has six of the same make and model, all with generous finish wear and decent bores. ;)

IMO, the Makarov is an excellent deal in a defensive handgun. 9mm Makarov is slightly more powerful than .380 ACP, which is to say that it's slightly underpowered IMO. Not as powerful as a 9x19 but I carry mine loaded with FMJ to make sure that the bullets will penetrate far enough to get to something vital. It does have the advantage of being pretty concealable.
They used to be common for around $150 from several sources but not anymore. Expect to pay at least $200 for a decent one now unless you get lucky. Or you could try posting a classified ad in your area and see what turns up. Someone out there might have one collecting dust that they'd let go for a little less.
Also look around for a CZ-82 also firing 9x18 Makarov. Similar sized gun but with a double stack magazine and a little more common right now.

I've also come across some decent revolver deals. One was a S&W M-36 that I found for $189 used. It wasn't in great shape and needed a couple parts and a change of grips, but after that it was serviceable. Another was a 4" Colt Trooper .38 Special. It was in pretty good shape for $215. I haven't found many good deals on the old Smith & Wesson service sized revolvers that are always recommended though - the guys who find them must be lucky.

SIG P6 at AIM surplus - $259 last I checked and good choice. I had a P-225 in my youth and made the mistake of selling it. No semi-auto I've owned since has measured up in comparison to it.

Last, download CDNN's catalog and see what they have. They're a good place to deal with and often have very good prices on police trade ins, closeouts, discontinued models, etc.

J&G has the CZ82 for 199. 12 rounds of 9x18 is nothing to sneeze at. They also have the smaller Polish P64 for 159 also in 9x18.

Buying a handgun and then finding out that it doesn't fit you can be a terrible experience. I've done it... I know. You may well find the Highpoint just aims well for you and that when you shoot the CZ82 it won't hit the target at 7 yards. My hands and stance and eyes may be different than yours. I may be able to plink a can of beans at 50 yards with the CZ and not hit squat with the hi point.

If you can.... find a range with rental guns you can shoot. Of course, I can't think of a range that has High Points and CZ82s for rentals. The next best thing would be to find a store that has these guns and compare them... IN YOUR HANDS. When the shopkeep hands you one of the guns... double check to make sure it's unloaded. Ask if he minds if you blind aim it. Face the safest possible direction, take a careful grip, take a deep breath.... close your eyes. Now draw the gun up to aim... still with your eyes closed. Once you've got a nice solid bead in your mind, open your eyes and look at your sights. Are your sights way off? They probably are a little bit. Try this again a few more times to get an idea how well the gun points and feels for you. While you're at it... try a bunch of guns.

Ok... that said.... I think I would go with the hi-point. It's ugly, but it's got a great rep. for honoring its lifetime warranty (as far as my internet reading has gone). I was in your boat once, and I seriously considered the cz-52 vs. hi point. I settled on a taurus pt-111 which has been a total champ in terms of reliability, but is very difficult to aim correctly. I'm not sure I could get accurate shots in an adrenaline fueled situation, but it is my go to handgun for bumps in the night.

Speaking of bumps in the night... have you considered a shotgun? If your thinking home defense, a Remy or Mossie 12 guage with 7 rounds of buckshot is in a league of its own. Concealed carry? Maybe the Mak, CZ82, or Taurus PT111.

Anyways, good luck, and don't be mad at me... because I'm gonna vote for Obama in 2008! Even still, I like my guns! Sarah Palin ain't no Ron Paul!

Handgun fit? Isn't that why they make aftermarket grips? I have never had a problem adapting to shooting about any handgun. Ain't like a shotgun, length of pull, camber, drop at comb, all that. You hold it, you sight it, you squeese the trigger. What's to fit? Sometimes the grip ain't right for trigger reach, but if Hogue makes a grip for it, I'm good. :D That is a problem with some autos I guess and the nagant and oddball stuff like that. I prefer guns I can get grips for just for that fit thing.

Now then, CCW with a Nagant or High Point? ROFL! WOW, well, Dirty Harry did it with a 29 I guess.

Makarov seems to be your best deal IMHO, or one of the 9x18 surplus or import guns. Decent power, excellent concealability, and I find the Maks pretty danged accurate. Sights kinda suck, but hell, for the money, it's the best I can think of for carry to fit your needs. Under 200 bucks for a well built, accurate CCW with adequate power. Hard to beat that!
