Hi-Point

The guy I use for my ffl emails me occasionally about special orders and stuff that he runs across and has for sale.

For whatever reason he just loves Hi-Points. Sells a ton of them and makes a special order of them every month.

The email he sent yesterday was something to this effect... "Making a special order on the Hi-Point .380. This one is a little different. Comes with a compensator, 2 mags, and instead of the standard cardboard box, this one comes with a black plastic Hi-Point hardshell case with bore brush. With shipping and ffl transfer should come to about $160 delivered."

I do not own a Hi-Point, and consider them one of the ugliest pistols made. However they are American made, have a lifetime warranty, and most people who own one talk about their reliability.

I didn't order one this time, however next time...What do you guys think?

Here we go again. In my admitedly limited experience, Hi-Point guns are very reliable and usable, though awkward. Some folks can't just say that and let it go; they have to make all kinds of silly claims about how bad they are. I have seen at least 20 H-P threads with folks saying how bad they are. Oddly, most of those start out with "I don't own a Hi-Point and have never seen one, but they are junk and blow up and ...."

If you chose to buy a Hi-Point I think you will be able to make up your own mind. Just accept it for what it is, a decent pistol at a very moderate price that is no work of art but works; when push comes to shove, "it works" is not a bad criterion for a pistol.

However if you think it is something you really desire to have then get one.

My son-in-law has on in .45acp and it shoots great. Very accurate and has never given him any trouble. I would have no problem in owning one.

The Guy I work with has a .380 in his truck and its decent. Its a good cheap gun. Goes bang every time and has a hellacious torture test video on YouTube and it impressed me. Go for it!

One of my 9mm's is an HP C9. Been reliable since I got it. My only complaint was that every time I would transport it, the cheap plastic sights would shift and next time I went to use it, it had a different POI.

There is a guy that makes an all metal sight just for the HP line of pistols. I got one and have been VERY happy with it.

About 800 rounds through it now.

Fixed barrel makes for good accuracy. Mag may require tuning.

Thanks for the replys. By the way, I was not slamming this pistol, nor do I have a deep burning desire to purchase one. I was simply stating that to me it is BF ugly. However in it's own ugly duckling sort of way, with the features offered from my ffl at $160 otd.

I know I usually waste, lose, friviously spend at least $160 most weekends. I really have never before considered buying one of these, but with the extra goodies added, I think I will.

If you run out of bullets it will make a hell of a club.

I think the 9mm is the exact same size as the .380. If it is, I'd get the nine.
I don't see em as concealable, but I wouldn't mind having one as a range gun or back up bedside protector or "throw it in the Jeep when I go mud riding" gun.

I suggest a CZ82, P64, P63, P83 instead of a hipoint. They dont cost much more.

They are big, heavy and a bit of a pain to breakdown (you need a punch) but they are also cheap, reliable, and have a great warranty

ive owned 4 of them my biggest complaint was the effot it took to break them down

There are many guns that some people won't own "as a matter of principle". Reviews of that ilk really don't mean much, as they aren't often based on direct experience outside of holding or inspecting a gun.

My Remington 770 rifle probably has a worse reputation than Hi-Point pistols do, and it's made by one of the most respected gun makers in history, so trying to characterize guns by BRAND can be dubious.

On the other hand, if you merely ask for opinions, then you're kind of opening up the doors for bashing. After all, the bashers are only giving the opinions the OP asked for. You can kind of avoid that scenario by asking for "EXPERIENCE BASED opinions". I've found that most folks here will respect that request and let the folks who actually own/have owned a Hi-Point give the reviews.

No bashing so far, though. My how Hi-Point threads have changed

I wouldn't get one, but only because I already have better pistols.
If you want something to just play around with, go for it. If it jams on the range, your life is not in jeopardy. How bad could it be if it only costs $160.00 and has a lifetime warranty.
If you want something that will provide a lifetime of good service, never jam, and be very accurate.... start saving up, because an autoloader like that hasn't been built yet, and if you want something like that, you might as well get a revolver, which will still be at least three times the price of the Hi Point, and revolvers do need some maintenance.

Do we really need to keep discussing this? There are a gazillion other Hi Point threads...

I used to own one (ended up selling it off). I personally never had an issue with it. The previous owner did have the magazine spring snap in two though (this issue was fixed before I acquired it).

The good news is that they do tend to work in general, and are relatively accurate.

That said, they are ugly, bulky, heavy, have a bad trigger, bad grips, limited capacity, limited holster options, and utilize a zinc slide that gives it a comparatively low life expectancy vs other autos.

They do have a lifetime warranty if you ever break it, but shipping back to the plant is on your dime (many other manufacturers will send a pre-paid shipping label). Shipped back once and you've added 1/3 of the cost of the pistol on top of the purchase.

If you are on a budget and just need a gun for protection that you don't plan on shooting often, then IMHO they get the job done. Even then I think most people would be better served by a used gun like a surplus CZ-82.

If you have the ability to save just a bit longer however, there are better guns to be had for not much more money. Anyone who shoots any notable amount of ammo will far exceed the cost of the gun in ammo costs anyways.

There are a couple (not many) of C9 failure reports over on the Hi Point forums claiming failures of the firing pin channel that caused the gun to lock up at around 2,500 rounds or so.

Still though that is alot of value IMO for a $150 gun with a lifetime warranty. Most people won't shoot that many rounds in a lifetime. I wouldn't mind having one, they're not as heavy or awkward for me as most people claim. They aren't pretty though, that I can agree with.

My thoughts exactly.

Here's the thing folks. Hi-Point threads invariably (and I do mean "invariably") end up being this: The OP has an honest question, and it usually gets answered pretty quickly. Then, just as quickly the thread devolves into "I wouldn't shoot/own/look at one" vs. "They work every time".

So you all know my standpoints on this: In my experience I have shot a couple, and they work just fine. I think they are horrendously ugly, and I do think there are better guns out there and so I will never own one. I will not, however, look down my nose at someone who does.

And with that explanation in place, I am going to close this thread. No one said anything out of bounds or anything, but historically these threads on this particular topic never yield anything useful. Feel free to shoot me a PM if you think I am pulling the trigger too soon on this, but if you do, please insure that your argument against this lock is better than some variation of the"I have one, and it rules"/"They suck" theme.
