I BOUGHT a Hi-Point

For years now, I have been reading these threads about Hi-Points. Hi-Points are great, Hi-Points suck, Hi-Points are great but they are ugly, Hi-Points are ugly but they have a great warantee, Hi-Point handguns suck, but Hi-Point Cabines are great. The same stuff is said in all of them including the one guy (his name excapes me at the moment) that tells the story of burying one in the desert in every one of those threads.

So in the middle of the lastest Hi-Point threads, I picked up the phone, called my dealer and told him to get me one. I had to repeat myself three times before he believed I was serious, then I had to wait a couple minutes for him to stop laughing. But evenutally I picked out one in .45 ACP. He said it would be here Monday and would cost me somewhere around $150.

I want to see what this is all about myself. I am tired of reading wild speculation and bashing from people who have never had one, shot one, or seen one. I will not be a member of that group.

Let me answer one of the rote questions asked in everyone of these threads. Why buy a Hi-Point when you can buy a Makarov ? Well, I am not limited to one or the other. And, I already own three Makarovs along with Colts, Springfields, Glocks, Rugers, Smiths, Brownings, Walthers, and probably a few others. I probably own between 50 and 100 handguns; autoloaders, revolvers, blackpowder, single shots, mouse guns, mini-revolvers, single stack, double stack, Stainless, blue, tennifer, parkerized, foreign and domestic .................................. but I don't own a Hi-Point; YET.

but i have not seen much of this hi-point gun, nobody ever post pics, all they say it's ugly without illustration for credibility.

You got the the .45 Hi-Point? Have you ever seen one in .45? They are huge! I think they about 3 1/2lbs.

I went over to the Hi-Point web site and they say it only weighs 32ozs. It also looks different than the .45 Hi-Point that I saw in the store. Am I just crazy or are there two different Hi-Point .45s? The one I saw had a MASSIVE slide but the one in the Hi-Point ad looks like a scaled up version of the .380.

I would have a hard time believing that anyone would not agree that it is ugly as a mud fence.

If I am conducting a show and tell where I am trying to impress my friends, this one will stay in the safe.

I don't know if there is more than one .45, but this one says that it has the NEW polymer frame.


One of the things that I am going to do with this is; In July I am taking the 250 handgun course at Gunsite. I am going to walk out the first morning with this beast in my holster and see if any of them start having chest pain.

Well sort of. I certainly don't need another handgun in .45 ACP, and if I did that Springfield Micro-whatever looks interesting. But I wouldn't call it a prank. I honestly want to know what one is like. I want to see if it is reliable. I want to see what kind of accuracy you can get out of one. I want to see if it is possible to buy a large bore, centerfire, autoloading handgun for less than $200 and have something that is reliable and at least exhibits decent accuracy. If it lives up to those requirements, that is terrific. Not everyone can afford the latest thing out from Les Baer, but they can still provide protection for themselves and have a lot of fun. It it turns out to be a piece of junk, then the joke is on me. Honestly, no matter how good it might be, I can't see myself shooting it a whole lot after the initally testing stage. At that point it will be kind of a prank. I have a pretty decent gun collection up to and including some NFA stuff. I have owned and bought guns since childhood. There is really no one gun that I am dying to own right now that I don't already have, however there are a whole lot of them that interest me for one reason or another and this is one of them. Kind of a novelty.

I guess I've always assumed that these things work okay. There's little reason they shouldn't. The gun is built on the same principles as most basic submachineguns. The fixed barrel will even make it accurate.

All of this was achieved by making a nine round .45 the size and weight of a .44. But handguns are supposed to be as portable as possible. That's what you give up with one of these things, along with a fair bit of longevity.


Hey, the Brits built the all steel Sten for $12. I'm just not sure if the Hi-Point is a good value when you consider about the same level of design and execution using even cheaper materials.

I bought a Sten gun also. They made them for $12 (or whatever) and I paid $2250 sixty years later (plus the $200 tax stamp). I will be ahead of the curve with the Hi-Point. When the significant collector interest starts, I will already have one.

I just checked the S&W website and it appears that the Hi-Point .45 is significantly lighter than a Model 29. The Hi-Point weighs 32 ounces and a Model 29 weighs anywhere from 41.5 ounces up to 54.5 ounces depending on the variation. And a Colt 1911A1 weighs 38 ounces according to the Colt website.

And the Hi-Point comes with a trigger lock at no additional charge.

I can't speak for the handguns, but I'm the "proud" owner of the 9mm carbine. I'm like you - curiosity got the better of me and I picked one up a local gun show.

As you say, they sho' is ugly, BUT they's fun to shoot. Heck, I've probably already gotten my money's worth out of this gun, but it's still bangin' away. I put their laser sight on it and it's pretty impressive regardless of the fact that it won't stay on point-of-aim. The red dot is "scary".

When I'm tired of shooting all the other guns, I pull this "orphan ugly duckling" out of the gun cabinet and put a couple of boxes through it just for grins.

I have to relate a story that is almost impossible for me to believe to this day.
I was hanging out at the local gun shop (now there is a surprise) and a guy walked in to pick up his new Hi-Point. It was one of those 9mms with the comp. He handed over two S&W revolvers one of which was a 686 (I don't recall what the other one was), filled out the paperwork and left.
I said, Terry, what was that all about ? He said that this guy had come in about a month ago and bought the same identical Hi-Point and he was so thrilled with it that he wanted another one and traded these two Smith revolvers for a second one. After taking a couple minutes to compose myself I told Terry that he should be ashamed of himself for making that guy give him those two fine revolvers for a Hi-Point. He said, NO, I didn't suggest any such thing, it was his idea; the customer made the offer including some cash as a kicker. Terry was honest enough to tell him the cash wasn't nessessary, but was not too honest to take the two revolvers.

At this months gun show there was a dealer that had the 9, 40, and 45 laying in their cases. I picked up the 9 and fondeled it a bit. To my coworkers dismay i layed it back down. They were just going crazy that I wouldnt buy the 9....for 150 total walk out the door price. So say around 120 before taxes and paperwork.... Kinda wish I would have picked it up anyway. As i want something cheap to shoot 9mm with. Still thinking about picking one up for a throw away pistol for the car
