FN Hi Power, roughly Vietnam era. The gun runs great until the last round in the magazine. The last round will fire, but the case ends up sitting on top of the empty magazine instead of being ejected. My first guess was that the extractor needs more tension. The ejector appears to be fine.

This gun spent a week on the bottom of a lake when we sank a boat several years ago. The finish is gone but it still runs. This is a new problem that's just started in the past few shooting sessions. Initially the case would get just barely ejected - like a few inches away - but then it turned into the above described problem. Thoughts?

Agreed. Extractor issue most likely. Not enough residual tension to hold the case under the hook long enough for the ejctor to strike it. Spring is getting weak or hook has wear.

I wonder if the little coil spring under the extractor may not be rusted or full of lake bottom silt.

The preceeding rounds are ejecting because the extractor has just enough purchase to pull the empty and have it glide across the top round in the magazine as a guide towards the ejector. The last round does not have anything to support it so it falls off the hook and just sits there.

Thanks for the link, that's pretty much what I was thinking. I'll take it down tonight and do any cleaning/filing that needs to be done.

Check and clean your magazine follower as well. Lack of tension or full rise of the follower will cause the same problem with the last round

:)

Edit: read the link.....oops

My gun has an internal extractor. While the principle is the same, I'm not sure I want to start filing away on it since it's not the same as the one in the link. Also, how old is this thing exactly? The serial number is 567XX. The hipowersandhanguns page starts at 70000.
