Hiding weapons in plain sight

If my firearm is not with me it is locked in my safe. I knew someone who was robbed with one of his own pistols he kept "hidden" around his house. Try looking down the barrel of your own gun you know works and you know is loaded.

Don't think you are hiding anything from your kids. They know where stuff is.

Hey I have one of these!

I bought mine from Atlanta Cutlery. It sure looks excellent onmy wall, and holds a 1911 well.

It really ticks me off that I can't buy a handgun without a built in lock---one more thing to make it fail! Why should all of us have to have "child proof" locks on our guns when we don't have "kids?" I have a good sized family, but I have no fear of the kids fooling around with my guns---they all have fur and four feet!

I don't know what your talking about.....none of my guns have a built in lock.

As far as guns in books.....they'd probably find it pretty fast when they dump every book on that shelf on the floor.

The only time I was burglarized, they went through everything. Dumped out drawers, tore clothes off hangars, emptied cardboard boxes full of magazines. Took computers, TV's, CD's. They missed that decorative little drawer built into the front of the wife's vanity. They didn't get any guns, because at the time the only guns we owned went out with us when we left the house. Cops came out, gave us a case number. They refused to take any fingerprints, from the mirrors (which the bad guys left palm prints all over) from the defective sliding glass door (the point of entrance) and refused to take down a list of items that we knew were stolen. Within ten minutes they were gone.

Look low.

Burglars are not always stupid, and are very knowledgeable about hiding things. They too are burgled, often by their "associates". They are desperate to hide their own guns and most especially to hide their drugs. So they meditate upon the hiding places that might be there.

I believe that a burglar would certainly look at that fat clock. I think hiding in plain sight is the only way to go, other than a good safe. It should be something so ordinary that they would not think might be hollow.

I have a rounded-top dresser with about three inches of clearance above the top drawer. I keep a folding AK47 there! They can yank all the drawers out but unless they kneel down and look UP they will never see it.

I also kept a pistol in a hollowed-out telephone book, right out front and obvious on the floor. I think that a burglar would not slow down to bend down and check it out.

Best of all, I had a junk bathroom scale that I took the guts out of, and stored a big Taurus auto and mags there. Who'd a thunk it? How many hurried burglars would consider something so obvious?

All this said, I still believe that a good safe is best for all but your nightstand and carry piece......................elsullo

How'd you hang it up there so it would be (A) retrievable, (B) secure, (C)unscratched, and (D) the hangers wouldn't be too bulky?

Plastic-covered metal clips? Wooden hooks? What worked best for you?

I recall seeing on the net somewhere what amounted to a coated, magnetic strip that you applied (sunken screws hopefully) onto a surface (under a desk for example) that could be used to hide a weapon. There were several videos on the site that went with it showing applications. If I see it, I'll post it.

ZOOM thats too cool !! is it a shooter ?
No, it's a casting, and it's not mine. But you could easily do something similar with a real shotty - use one of those lamp kits that has a cork that's supposed to stick in the neck of a chianti bottle or whatever....

I wouldn't use a commercially-produced gun "hider". In case a smart criminal who's looking to get guns reads up on this stuff, he may know exactly what to look for.

And while the tactic of hiding a bunch of guns Punisher-style is appealing, I see this as strategically unsound if someone else can find it and use it against you. Don't want somebody getting one of your better guns against the one in your hand.

For 230RN

For 230RN: Pull out the drawer, and pull out the gun. The AK is fairly well supported and simply pulls out horizontally from two "hooks". Both the barrel tip and the magazine bottom rest upon wooden structural support parts already built in to the dresser. The key items are two home-made flat "Z" shaped metal clips screwed under the wooden top of the dresser, which the underfolding stock upper rail slides over. I also considered using simple straps of leather or velcro stapled up under the top, and may yet add some velcro for security. The back of the top dresser drawer had to be notched so that it would clear the down-hanging charging handle of the AK, as there is only about two-and-a-half inches of space, just enough room. The gun WOULD fall out if the dresser were tipped forward, so I still need to work on that. A simple block of stiff foam rubber might be enough, or some carefull bending of the hooks, or some velcro straps?.....................elsullo ;)

Elsullo, that is one of the most ingenious ideas I have heard in a long time. Looks like I have a reason to buy an underfolder too :D

elsullo,

i like your idea in theory, but i see one problem...

the one time i was burglarized, they didn't just take out each drawer. they tipped the whole damn thing over. if all you have to do is pull the AK out horizontally, it would fall out if they use this method. (assuming i'm imagining your setup right...)

tipping a whole dresser and letting all the drawers come out is faster than pulling them out one at a time. and they don't care if they mess up your nice wood floors. trust me on that one...
