I know these are carbines, but they take pistol rounds and pistol mags. I like the fact that the High Point is cheaper (this is a big positive), but I like a lot of the features of the Kel-tec (standard mags, folddown...). I will be getting one or the other in 9mm most likely. Does anyone have expirience with both? This gun will be for plinking at the range and possibly small game. How does accuracy and quality compare between the two? Thank you.

Love my Kel Tec 2000 in .40S&W. I had one problem with the front site and Kel Tec sent me a replacement overnight. And it is much prettier than the Hi-Point.

I have shot both, and owned a kel-tec for a short while. Cosmeticly the kel-tec in my opinion is the better looking of the 2 but accuracy was very good with both. after spending a month with the keltec I sold it. Here's why:

1. Magazines (mine took glock mags) would randomly detatch and fall to the floor under recoil. Now, I do have large hands and may have repeatedly hit the mag release while firing, but no matter how I held it, it continued to happen.

2. upon disassembly for cleaning I noticed somthing that I consider a SEVERE design flaw. the ejector is polymer, and is actualy a integral molded fin on the interior of the reciever. If the ejector fails or wears as a result of heat from long strings of fire, or simply from recoil, the entire weapon needs to be replaced, as the ejector is not a seperate part. This may have been remedied in later models (I dont know) but in the gun I purchased in 2002 this was the case.

For the record, I have been looking at purchasing a 9mm carbine recently, and have narrowed it down to the Ruger, the Marlin, and the Beretta Storm. Granted these are higher priced rifles, but I want to buy once, and not have to worry about it again. I paid $325 for the kel-tec new. the marlin and ruger were in the $400-$500 range and the Beretta was at $600, when I looked at them last week (Minnesota Prices). The Hi-Point was at $150, but takes only single stack mags, and the mags are kind of hard to come by around here.
For me, I think the beretta storm is the best choice, because mags, accesories (rails lights optics) are readily available and easy to mount. Then again I have an M9 and a TON of milsurp 15 and 20 round mags, so my opinion is biased.
good luck
I hope this helps

I have a Hi-Point carbine. I replaced the stock with one from ATI and added a 2x red dot from TruGlo.

It makes me smile everytime I shoot it.:)

I like the Kel-tek more, but the Hi-point is rock solid and will serve you well.

Can't really go wrong with either. Plus kel-tec service is legendary!

If only they'd make a .357SIG or 7.62x25 version!

I have a Keltec in 9mm, S&W format mags and a HP 995 as well. Love 'em both. You will too. Get both.

If I could only have one I would prefer the KT. It's more versatile, folds up, hi-cap mags generally available, slightly more accurate . OTOH, the HP has a very low price point and is a little easier to put a scope on it.

Flip a coin. Or get both.

Bill

I also have both. The Kel-Tec looks "cooler" and take larger capacity magazines. The Hi-Point is more accurate and is easier to mount sights on. They're cheap, get both.

I dont have a Kel tec but i think they have a bunch of good features.

I do however have a Hi Point and while its not pretty it is boringly accurate, as in " Yawn...i shot out the center of the target again. Maybe if i fire it while standing on my head... nope still cant get bigger groups" Seriously i get 1 ragged hole groups from 50yds rapid fire.

If you can get over the looks and live with 10rds get the Hi Point. If you want more rounds get the Kel Tec...or get 2 Hi Points.

Well I persoanlly like the Kel-Tec for all the options mentioned. I really like
hi-cap mags.
But I've had experience with both Hi-Point (9mm and .40cal) weapons. "Spot on" explains accuracy and function.
It will feed anything, cheap ammo; expensive crap; hollow points.(Winchester Ranger) And all this with minimul up keep since we didn't know how to break them down and clean them. A few drops of oil between two thousand rounds was about it. After about 1500rnds of reloads we dicovered Break-Free.
Small surface rust agaisnt the upper reciver but it never hindered function.
Good luck with what ever you get, and shop around before breaking bread with any gunstore.

PS For some reason the .40cal is quieter. Wierd right.

I have shot the Kel-Tec in .40 S&W. To me, it bangs the heck out of your cheek with the tube-stock; never shot it in 9mm though. Love Kel-Tecs too; I have or have had, 4 different ones, never had a problem with any of them.

I have a Hi-Point in 9mm. Did like Woolfam did; replaced the dog-puke ugly stock with one from ATI (Hi-Point is redesigning their stock, btw). I mounted a Millet red-dot on it and love the heck out of it. I have put well over 600 rounds through it and have yet to clean or oil it. The trigger really breaks in and smoothes out at about 100 rounds (my shootin' pard's did the same as mine). The only drawback is the 10 rounds-only magazines. I tried two Pro-Mag 15 rounders-they would not function properly. In fact, one of them slid up past the magazine catch and bent the firing pin and/or ejector. I told Hi-Point what I did and they said "Okay. Send it in and we'll fix it."

I can shoot it outdoors without ear plugs comfortably. It is one of the most fun guns I've ever shot.

PS: Why is this thread in "Handguns: Autoloaders"? Shouldn't it be in "Rifle Country"?

Get the Sub2000

I have a KelTec Sub2000, 9mm, Glock mags. Good shooter, works fine.

Get the Sub2000 (mine is avail. - I have too many guns I'm not using)

I have a Kel-Tec in 9mm and .40. The mag catches were plastic at first and then changed to add a metal insert as they would wear and fail. Kel-Tec sent me a replacement on for my 9mm free. I THINK the ejectors on mine are metal, I will have to check. They may have been plastic and changed also. I don't know. I will check mine tonight. They shoot real well. I like the peep sights and they are easy to pick up fast and shoot well, at least for me. They are fun guns. :) I have never shot a Hi Point, but people say good things about them. Sportsmans Guide has 15 round mags for them now.

I've heard nothing but praise for all of the above, performance wise.

I handled a Hi-Point (Hy-Point?) but wasn't very impressed. The furniture made squeaking noises as I held various parts of the gun and I didn't like the fit so much. The Kel Tec is nicer in that it can take Glock mags (I think they have different models, also?) and it seemed to be built and fit a lot better but it's dog ugly.

The Storm is nice (so nice that I bought one) but spendy for a simple pistol caliber carbine.

Antihero
I do however have a Hi Point and while its not pretty it is boringly accurate, as in " Yawn...i shot out the center of the target again. Maybe if i fire it while standing on my head... nope still cant get bigger groups" Seriously i get 1 ragged hole groups from 50yds rapid fire.

My thoughts exactly, its sooo accurate and trouble free its almost boring to shoot.....one heck of a gun for $169.00. wouldnt sell it for 500 bucks.
