Owners of the HK 91, I am seeking your combined wisdom. Please give me your suggestion and source of SPARE PARTS for replacement that will likely break. Your recommendation on parts that are likely to break and may not be available in a SHTF scenario. I am looking to obtain these spare parts and put them in a surplus GI ammo box when something breaks on the HK 91 Thanks for your time.

I have a spare bolt, locking piece, firing pin, bolt carrier and rollers and also a spare stock with recoil rod and a extra lower that I keep in a box in case I need them....

The only parts that really wear out on a HK91/G3 are the extractor spring, extractor, ejector lever and recoil spring, in that order. If you don't shoot in full auto, they will all last a long, long time.

The only part I would bother to keep a spare around is the extractor spring.

The locking piece and rollers can eventually wear out after many thousands of rounds. You can check these by measuring the bolt gap.

Hands down the best and least expensive place to get HK91/G3 and other HK parts parts is from Robert Johnson at http://robertrtg.com

He has a good selection of surplus and contract parts.

Adam Weber at www.HKparts.net and Gordon Miller at www.hkspecialist.net are also good people with a great selection of parts, but are generally more expensive as they mostly deal in brand new German HK parts.

If you start with a PTR91, and replace US parts with German parts, will that cause problems in terms of part number counts? My friend wants to replace the US buttstock with a german surplus collapsible stock, but I think that will violate the part law, right?

If the rifle has a flash hider, the PTR91 bone stock has 17 parts.

The parts are:

(1) receiver
(2) Barrel
(3) Mounting blocks (trunions)
(4) Muzzle attachments
(5) Bolt
(6) Bolt carrier
(7) Cocking handle
(8) Trigger housing
(9) Trigger
(10) Hammer
(11) Sear
(12) Butt stock
(13) Pistol grip
(14) Forearm
(15) Magazine body
(16) Magazine Follower
(17) Magazine Floor plate

As far as I know, the barrel, receiver, trunion, cocking handle, pistol grip, forearm and buttstock are US made.

That leaves 10 German parts. If you put on a German stock the count is broken.

I believe you can buy US made trigger, sear, and hammer and that would bring it back in line if you used a German stock.

I believe that the PTRs have a US-made hammer/trigger/sear, also. That may vary with production runs, because they always seem to be out of one of those three.
