I'm considering getting an Hk usp 45 within the year.
Things I like, manual safety/de-cocking lever, the magazine release is real nice. The slide release is over sized, overall ambidextrous controls. External hammer, and no trigger safety,

Dislikes; price, grip shape/size

Concern; a nasty rumor about the trigger construction and trigger pull.

I like the feel of the Springfield xd 45, except I'm not comfortable with a locked and cocked pistol even with all the integral safeties. (their manual safety is promising)

Any suggestions? subtable alternatives? Please no 1911's or glock's, great guns, not what I'm looking for. I plan to take it hiking so weight is a consideration. Full sized polymers.
Thanks

Heya Cave Dweller,

I won't bother repeating my old post, but heres a link to it. I had alot of the same concerns you had. I ended up with a SIG and havn't looked back.

HK is a great gun, but if it don't feel right, then it isn't great for you.

RFB

P.S. So-Cal representin! Where you at? ;)

I own an H&K USP 45 and I have no regrets... The trigger is a lil long and the DA is kinda stiff, but.... If you get all those components polished up to include the barrel ramp, it shoots like a dream. I like mine and I shoot fairly accurate with it out to 15meters. I agree about the price. I got my for $820, It came with three mags night sights and all the other whistles advertised and the store manager even thru in 2 boxes of blazer brass ammo so I couldn't complain. Not only that, but, I have a friend that works at insight technologies and I acquired the M2 UTL attachment for the (USP only) for have the price as well (batteries not included). So needless to say I ain't complaining cause I got what I paid for and that's reliability and functionability.

I suggest going down to your local range and test fire on for yourself. Shoot at least 200 rounds I can almost guarantee that you will be happy my friend. If I am wrong I will dress up like Dolly Parten and do the river dance for you on youtube.

Thanks,
Don't worry, I'll test fire it before buying. And while I do love riverdance, I don't expect anybody to dress up like dolly parton. expect perhaps mrs parton herself.
The hk 45 looks promising, Duno if any of my local stores carry it.

A couple features that some have complained about, I absolutely love. the mag release and the safety/de-cocker. While I haven't had the opportunity to fire one yet, in the few times I handled one in the store the ease of operation was very nice.

HK45 or HK45 compact. Terrific guns. Interchangeable back straps make it a fit for anyone. Has every thing the USP has Plus match trigger on the HK45 and o ring barrel. I never thought that thing really mattered but my accuracy with the pistol says otherwise. Try it at least.

Go check out the FNP45, polymer gun, about the same size as the USP45, I like the grip much better. It comes with 3 14round mags, ambi mag release, ambi decocker, DA/SA and comes in matte black or stainless/black.

The Smith M&P 45 as well as the new Springfield XD's now come with a thumb safety like a 1911 in addition to the other safety features. I have not tried one but that may be an option you have not considered.

Got a good deal on a used HK once and it was a good gun but I did think it would have been worth the price of a new gun. Sold mine and am happy with the Glock 20 in 10mm for my hiking gun.

Consider the compact USP in .45

I have an H&K USP45 full size and like it very much. It is reliable, accurate and durable. But it is quite large.

Since you are in CA you can't buy one with the full 12 round magazine, and will be restricted to 10 rounds. In that case, why not buy the compact version of the gun, which has 8+1 capacity in .45 and is much easier to carry around because of smaller dimensions and lighter weight? I have the USP compact in .40 and it is a wonderful gun.

I have the USP45, but with the Match trigger, giving it a much nicer feel. I am 100% happy with it.

The new HK45 has the Match trigger as a standard item, so that might be a better choice, plus it has a bit slimmer grip.

Thanks, the hk 45 is looking like one way to go. my local gun store (Turners) doesn't keep it in stock though. Hopefully they can order it, if it's CA approved. That is if i can also find a pistol range that has it for rent.

Is it possible to install a DA trigger on an XD?

Cave Dweller,

I was going to recommend the HK45 also, but since you're in CA that'll change things. The HK45 is still available to us Californians however, you'll find them sold at a premium at www.calguns.net in the classifieds section. Don't jump on it yet though, it's still brand new. Give it some time and the prices will start dropping. First HK45 listed at over $2K, then $1500, now lowest is $1300.

I have an USP. It's an ok gun. Reliable, ability carry C&L, BIG and mean looking. That's about it for positives as it's bulky, the DA trigger pull is long, heavy and gritty, and the single action is heavy with a lot of creep. It works great though, and about as reliable as my 1911s. :D

Since you're in Socal, if you want to try mine out you're free to. At least then it'll get some use.

Thanks for the offer Black Majik, but as enamored with the usp line as I am, it was barely in my price range. (only because of the expected economic stimulus check, which will probably wind up being squandered on luxuries like food and rent:p)the HK 45 is a bit too much. I've bought guns without shooting a sample before, but that's pretty steep for not even having handled one.

Thanks for all your help guys, I know there's plenty nicer guns for less coin. And I think I found one, for just under $400.

First time I picked up an XD 9mm, bout 5 years ago, I thought "wow this is cozy". That match made in heaven just wasn't to be. Today I fondled a Taurus Millennium pro 45 (pt145) and thought the same thing. Nice fit.

Still thinking on it, it'll be a few months before I make a decision.
