Hmm, What gun would you buy your signifigant other or, would you?

I agree with the others to let her pick out what she wants... Many reasons for that not the least of which is putting her on level ground in being involved.

But, from what my... uh... wife has liked in the past, if I were to surprise her with a gun that would be exclusively hers, I'd strongly consider a SIG 228... Maybe with a short trigger.

I'd buy her something that I really liked, because inevitably it'd end up mine. Like several folks here have suggested, for some folks guns just aren't their thing, no matter how gently and lovingly they might be introduced to them...my wife's certainly one of them. But at least she has a grudging acceptace of my affinity for them.

Now to go shopping for that SW1911Sc for her...;)

My wife (who prior to the LA riots in 1992 was as anti as you get) absolutely loves to shoot the Walther P22 she bought for me a while back.

It has a small grip, no recoil, is relatively quiet (compared to .38, 9mm, et al), is really fun to shoot and most important (to her) it looks sexy as h3ll. Don't discount the visual appeal aspect when dealing with the 'gentler' sex. :)

My 2 Cents

Past girlfriends have always been eager to get into our sport with a .22. A 9mm or larger always scared them re: guns.

Congratulations on introducing someone new to shooting. I took my wife to the range and let her try both autos and revolvers. Since she is not really into shooting but realizes the need to know how to use one she chose the revolver (No extensive practice on immediate action drills, malfunctions). The next session she used the 4" 357(w/38's) and I just made sure she was safe and kept the target <10 yards. The third time I lined up the snubby, medium and large frame with a box of 38's. After reviewing safety procedures and watching her briefly, told her to use each one and decide which she liked best.

Just picked up a barely used 38 Speed Six for $250.00 that will be hers.

Guns for her to TRY.

H&K USP 9mm. Grip not too large, comfortable recoil. My wife liked mine so much she took it.

4"bbl .38 S&W revolver. NOT a snubby--those things are hard to shoot.

Ok... having been through this with the wife and mom-in-law already, I THINK I'm qualified to answer...

The correct gun to get your SO is WHICHEVER GUN SHE WANTS. When I first met my wife, the only handgun I had was my Colt 1991 Compact, and she HATES it: doesn't feel right in her hand, etc. So we played around with several, and ended up getting her an H&K USP 40c... which has since been sold to a friend. Why? Wife decided she LOVED the feel of a Kimber (and she'll be getting hers in the next week or so)...

Mom-in-law was an even funnier story. Took her out to teach her the basics. She liked the Ruger Std... wasn't too thrilled with the 9mm... and I almost had to cold-cock her to get the 45 back! And the looks I got when the guys at the range found out it was my mom-in-law I was teaching were PRICELESS...
