I have been carrying a .40 3" XD as a CCW personal defense for the last year. I was speaking with a friend tonight and was told that hollow points should not be used in the sub as, maybe something with the muzzle length and velocity?, but they don't "open up" as they should. I have not heard of that before and wondered if thats maybe something with the 9mm? Or is that true as well with the .40? I have never heard this and wanted to get some input. First post and glad to have this resource. Thanks.

Well, I'll give you the two cent explanation and let someone who has a greater technical knowledge give you the $2 version.

There's a grain of truth in what he's telling you in that shorter barrel = less velocity, but tell you the truth most of the conventional semiautomatic "service" cartridges don't really get that much of a performance boost from the extra inch or two of barrel. While it's something you could definitely measure on a chronometer, the performance on a bad guy from the XD subcompact vs. the XD service in the same caliber isn't really going to be all that different.

The real advantage of the full sized XD or any other similar size gun over the compact is that it facilitates better shot placement with its longer sight radius and larger grip, not to mention a few more rounds on board in the Free States doesn't hurt anything either. Most people find out pretty quick that when they actually "run a gun" (self included in a big way) they can present and perform better with a full sized gun. That's why the bigger gun will perform better, it's about the shot placement and getting shots on target faster, not a minimal boost in ballistics. The compact is a compromise.

Of course if you really practice a lot with both, you can narrow that gap to where you can perform well enough with either.

Now as for the hollow point expanding, heck it might or might not out of the 4" gun (although it more than likely will). It has more to do with the design of the bullet and its relative level of technology than anything + dumb luck, imho. I mean what are you going to do, carry FMJ instead like that's some kind of superior alternative?

Probably bounce right off. Don't overanalyze. I know, it's the internet, we all have to obsess over data, for situations we'll never be in. Just remember Rule #1 in a gunfight.

Thanks Euclidean for the layman's explanation. It was helpful. Too funny Ski, internet=obsessive. Ok, I'm new to the boards, I'll bite, what's the first rule?

I have Winchester 180 Gr. Ranger HP's in my XD SC. If they don't expand, so what. If properly placed I believe they will end hostilities.

If it makes you feel better you can use Speed Gold Dot +P Short Barrel since it's designed for that use specifically. Personally, I don't think it matters that much.

I carry Federal hydrashocks in my XD40sc. They feed and fire flawlessly, I guess I could go fire a few into a tank of water to see if they open up but I'm not real comfortable with that. I think the feeding and firing trump the opening up anyhow. If for some reason I need to defend myself in court it can be said not only was I was legally carrying concealed I was carrying personal protection ammunition to boot.

hollowpoints

I think the early hydroshocks had that problem. Bullet technology has progressed since then. I figure it's best to go with the bullet that will do the most damage so I choose a hollowpoint over a fmj for self defense.

Handguns keep getting smaller and ammo manufacturers try to keep up with what people carry.

Hollowpoints are what most LEO's carry. This is also a reason that I use them. Less chance of over penetration. Don't want to hurt innocent bystanders.

I had asked a similar question on another forum, more for which was better in a smaller gun. Several companies make them specifically for compacts, but Speers gold dot and Federal Rangers seemed to be favorites among many shooters. Whichever feeds through your gun better. Haven't had any problem with either. :D
