I recently purchased a Springfield XD sub-compact .40 S&W and was wondering if any of the XD extra magazines would work with my particular handgun or would I need to purchase a certain type of XD magazine?

The standard XD-40 and XD-40 Mod2 (this model has been discontinued) magazine will work in your Sub-Compact. That said they will stick out a bit. There is a grip sleeve that will go over the full size magazine magazine to give you a full size grip. XDm, XDs magazines will not work.

Where can I find an extra grip sleeve?

Just do a search for XD-40 Magazine with grip extension.

https://www.xdgunparts.com

I use to buy a lot of XD parts from the above website but I have not done business with them in probably 7 years. They may not be the best prices anymore but they do specialize in XD stuff.

You can buys the complete 12 rd magazine with grip sleeve extension or just the grips sleeve extension to go on existing 12 round magazines.

Just the grip sleeve:

I think they come with the magazines.

I have seen XD-S mags fit and function in an XD-E, so you may have some success mixing and matching. (The mag did stick out further, exposing the metal below the grip.)

XDs and XDe magazines will not work in the original XD pistols. The XDs and XDe are single stack magazine where the original XD is a double stack.

The XD-40 Sub Compact will accept magazines from the original XD and the XD Mod 2 versions only. It will not accept XDm, XDs, or XDm.

Left to right:
XD-40 Sub-Compact magazine 9 rds
XD-40 Sub-Compact w/ Pierce Grip extension, no added capacity 9 rds
XD-40 standard magazine 12rds (for XD-40 Service and XD-40 Tactical)
XD-40 standard magazine with grip sleeve for Sub-Compact 12 rds
XD-40 with Arrendondo magazine extension 15rds
XD-40 with Arrendondo magazine extension and grip sleeve just to be silly 15rds.

XDE or XDS mags won't work in XD SC or Mod2. The first two are single stack XD SC are double stack.

I didn't do a very good job of making myself clear. I meant something to the effect of interchangeable between similar guns. XD-E and XDS are similar; what's similar in the double stack lines, if anything?

You'll need to buy XD 40 magazines. No S, no E, no M.
XD-Mod 2 magazines will work also. That said I don't think there was any real distinction between XD-40 and XD-40 Mod 2 as far as magazines go they simple both use the same magazine the original XD-40 magazine. I beleive the only real difference between the original XD and the Mod 2 was cosmetic, the internals were the same. It interesting that SA stopped making the Mod 2 but continue to make the original. That Grip Zone thing really killed the Mod 2.

The only difference between the defender and mod 2 is grip texture, trigger guard, sights, maybe one other thing according to CS when I called. Everything else is the same. I was concerned when I bought the defender if I would have the same trigger as the Mod 2. The trigger is great on both. So when I look for stuff I know I can use it if listed as Mod 2.

The defender series is simply the original XD packaged with less accessories. As you say it can use things from the Mod 2 since the mod 2 is very similar to the original with primarily only cosmetic changes.

Interestingly it appears that Springfield has almost completely drop 40S&W from the entire line of XD all version. If I am seeing this right there is currently only one model of the XDs that is offered in 40S&W.

I’m sorry, I meant a magazine loader. I didn’t see one on the website that you provided.

Ok I understand now. As D.B. Cooper suggested up thread the UpLULA by MagLULA is one of the best pistol magazine loaders going. It's fairly universal and will work with many different magazines and once you learn the technique is very quick and easy to load magazines with.

Are you sure? They still make the original?

Not as much as I first thought but they still offer the two versions of the 9mm Defender which is the original XD with limited extras packaged with it. It seems they no longer offer any of the other calibers (40S&W, 357 Sig, 45GAP, 45ACP) or the Tactical version of the original series anymore. Just the Sub-Compact and the Service in 9mm.

You can find the Mod 2 out there just look around. I chose the defender because I'm cheap but the difference was only cosmetic, saved $100. plus.

Their .45 got a good review by Gun Tests magazine. Now that I think of it, I don't recall any of the XD pistols receiving a bad review. There's some people that don't like the grip safety. I personally prefer it.

The grip safety obsession is a bit ridiculous. It's not in the way or require a seperate action. You have to grip the gun so pick it up or shoot it so what's the big deal it's not in the way.
