home defense: m1 carbine or sks paratrooper

I had a para SKS with a side folder once. A friend "pawned" it to me for $150. I eventually sold it back to him for the same money. It was a great little rifle, and I'd have kept it, but keeping my word is more important.
That said, I still like a M1 over the SKS for a "home defense" weapon. However, I'm not currently doing that. I really would rather run something with a can, and can't bring myself to thread any M1.

I couldn't choose because...I don't have an SKS and my carbine is just too dear to me to give it to the cops just because some punk chose my house to break into.

I have other choices that would be just fine so the little carbine would not get the call.
