Anyonw know of a good home defense shotgun?
1) Should be eather pump or simi-auto
2) Hopefully around 7-9 rounds
3) variety of chokes (screw in full)
4) price range $350 - 500 (will spend more if can pull double duty as a hunting shotgun)
5) reliable gun with a trusted name brand

870s are the standard to which all else is held. Get at least one and lots of ammo.

That Turkey gun is an excellent choice. Check the Archives for more input....

I already have a Rem 1187 sps camo which I LOVE :D That gun is my baby, im looking for something that is more... SHORT, something kinda tactical like

For both HD and sporting use, you will have to compromise somewhat. You want a short barrel for HD use so it won't get stuck going around corners yet you need a little longer barrel for sporting use for balance and swing for wing shots. A possible compromise is the Bronwing BPS Upland model which has a 22" barrel.

I have to dido on that 870 Turkey express as being a good choice. The 21 inch Turkey barrel is short enough to serve as HD , you can add a mag. extension if you desire, and it has interchanable chokes.

It's modestly priced on one of the most proven pump gun platforms .

Hmm... I can list a few that'll work quite well for you as a Home Defense gun

1) 870 HD Express
2) 870 Wingmaster Police trade-in
3) 870 Police Magnum
4) 870 Express with 18.5" barrel and 28" barrel to interchange.

Those should fit your price range quite nicely. :D

Mossberg.

they have a few that go up to 9+1 capacity. synthetic stock, though.

then, of course, there's the Remmy 870, but you need a mag extension.

Another vote for the 870. I've got one next to the bed for HD with a 20" cyl. bore, and when I want to go shoot some ducks I just throw on the longer barrel with interchangeable chokes.

Or at least that's what I used to do when I only had one 870. Now that I have 12 or so the long barrel gets it's own action.

As noted above, you should be able to get a brand new one for around $250. A mag extention for ~$40, and a used barrel from ebay in the $80 range. You can save some money and buy a used gun to start, they don't tend to break and some of the actions get really nice with use. That should get you your hunting and HD shotgun withing your budget.

Decisions Decisions...

The mossy #50665 590® 12 ga. Pump Action 9-shot capacity, parkerized finish, bead sight, 20" cylinder bore barrel with heat shield and Speed-Feed® stock.

Does anyone have any info on the Speed-Feed® stock?

Is it possbile for a full size 24" ballal to fit on the 1187 police? If so that may be the one.

Home defense shotgun

I picked up a Mossberg 590 (broken-in) last week for $279 less a trade-in -- the best deal I could get new-retail in metro Richmond would be $375 +/- (which still ain't bad). The stock has a spring-loaded chamber on either side, each of which takes two shells.

Either the 500 or 590 Mossberg will suit you well (the 590 has a higher capacity, which was one of your criteria). Good luck, r/

Seconding the Saiga-12. They run about $400 used (no longer imported), the conversion to a folding stock and pistol grip and AK trigger is about $100 and 3 hours of work, and they accept any AK style side-mount sight. I got a NCStar Red Dot tube for mine, along with a side-to-top rail mount, and zeroed it in at about 10yds. If I have to get closer than that, I just aim with the bottom of the reticle instead of the dot, and it works great. Plus, you can get the barrel sawed down in combination with the folding stock, and still re-thread it to accept whatever choke you'd like.

Plus, if you want to spend some time with a soldering iron, you can take two of the 5rd magazines and make them into a 10rder.
