I'm wanting to get a shotgun for home defense. My home is not in the ghetto, but close enough. About 1200 sf. In case of the unlikely occurance an person decides to break into my home while I'm asleep I would like to have a weapon handy. Just behind my headboard I'd like a Surbu Super Shorty. Is this a good idea? If you were me, what would you have? Thank you

A longer gun with a buttstock on it will be much easier to shoot straight. A plain old riot gun will do you more good than the Serbu, and after all, there is no need for your house gun to fit into a briefcase.

a sorta shotty shorty would work if that's all you have but it's not what i'd choose. you do realize there is mory paperwork and hassle involved (NFA act of 1934)? plus consider if you do have to fire and the shoot goes bad you could face having the wrong jury listening to a slick lawyer paint you as a demented killer with an "outlaw" weapon. for the same money you could buy a good pump AND a handgun. if it's the cool factor you're considering check out norinco's 87leveraction (the Terminator's gun in T2) or their trench gun.http://www.rrarms.com/catalog.php?action=1041&brand=Norinco

Super-Shorty capacity is 2+1. If ghetto proximity is a concern, this may not be optimal for a scenario with multiple intruders, depending on how proficient you are at reloading.

Other options to consider:

Kel-tec KSG

Remington 870 in a configuration of your choice http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/991/products_id/95077

Remington 1100

At my house, it's just a plain 'ol 870 Express with 18-1/2" barrel.

I have a Benelli Supper Nova tactical which is nice because it can take 3 and half inch shells, it also has a rotating bolt which makes it stronger, and Ghost ring sites are fun for slug shooting. That being said if you read a thread on here called the combat shotgun what seemed to be the most popular is a pump with bead sites and no pistol grip because you can bring up on target faster.
If you can get your hands on a old Winchester Model 12 that is a nice gun, My fiance's grandfather is going to leave his to her along with all his other guns.
The 870 of course would be a good option.
If you are not set on a pump than maybe a Saiga 12?
I would not suggest the shorty just because of the round count and the money put into it but if that is what you want than go for it just remember to fill out all the paper work.

I just keep a 20 gauge coach gun handy with a butt sleeve on it with extra rounds, 3-0 buckshot. It's also my dove gun, so I'm very familiar with it.

Any field gun will work and if you want a short barrel, most pumps have that option, just buy the barrel or get a combo gun or just get something like a Mossberg 590 and forget about sporting uses. I'm a hunter, though, so I just use one of my hunting shotguns. I have a Mossberg 500, but don't ever take the plug out of the magazine. It's necessary for duck hunting. So, I've never bought a short barrel for it and prefer the coach gun, anyway, as it's shorter, lighter, and handier. But, that Serbu or whatever it is would be a bit of a LOUD SOB in the house and no more effective IMHO than my coach gun, LESS effective for me as i want a full stock on my shotgun. Pistol grips are for pistols.

Pistol grips are for pistols, eh?

Are semi-pistol grips for semi-pistols or just semi-automatics then? Folding stocks for poker players? Collapsible stocks for the infirm? Straight grips limited to heterosexuals? In that case, full stocks are apparently for those who have just eaten and I don't even know what a telescope would want with a gun!

It is a little narrow discussion to distill our options into a cliche. Such as "birdshot is for birds" when I personally know of only one, a turkey, who has fired a gun (and successfully hit a target by the way -- true story).

Thanks for all of the help and suggestions. I'm thinking the Surbu might be a mistake for me. A special thanks to btg3 for the recommendations and links, I'm looking to go that route now. Thank you.

My Beretta 1201FP has this combo stock and I see it as an advantage for a home defense shotgun. You could hold someone at bay one handed with the butt tucked up under your armpit while calling 911 with your phone if needed with your other hand. I wouldn't own a PGO shotgun myself.

Well you could try a .410 Mossberg 500 special purpose (if recoil is a problem),the pistol grip can be swapped out for a shoulder stock if you want, and with the buckshot loads that are out now the "stopping power" is still better than most handguns on the market (and can be had for about the same price as a 12 or 20 gauge).

I have the Coach Gun. Not expensive for a new S/S. Winchester offers 1oz. slug buffered by 3 00 buck pellets. OO buck is also a option and this gun can use 3" shells. A lot of coyote hunters use # 1 buck which I think would be a good HD gun (16 pellets). I have the 12 Gauge which comes with choke tubes in IC and Mod which would be ok for my dove hunting. Recoil can be tamed with good butt pad. If people were break into my house it would only be from one entry and 2 shots from this bad boy would certainly cause some panic allowing enough time for your always present, in my case 1911 to go to work.

I use a Mossberg 590A1 (model 51660), loaded with reduced recoil 00 buck, with a butt-cuff loaded with Reduced recoil Slugs.

I agree with the Saiga recommendation above... especially if you're expecting to defend your homestead against hordes of zombies.

Mossberg 500 or Remington 870 both would fit the bill. I would skip the 3 inch rounds go and with 2 3/4. Less shoulder pain and better return to target.

Mossberg 590A1 12 GAUGE 20 inch barrel 8 round magazine Ghost Ring Sights Model Number 51663. Buckshot

american made 12 gauge with any load... target load will do... one u know how to load, shoot, eject, and load again for a follow up shot if needed would be ideal... function test regularly and a lil practice and ur set dude... really unless ur raiding a drug house or bin ladens lair u aint gotta have every lil doodad u can afford on it.... ammo and a gun that functions is key tho....

For me it would not work unless when I bought it I practiced a lot (this should be the case for every gun) because I just don't think I would be comfortable with it. To me, it's a collector's item I would like to have and more of a novelty than anything practical.

I would stick with a tactical shotgun (I prefer a stock with a pistol grip) or a nice handgun. Even a little carbine like a Kel-Tec Sub2000 or HiPoint 9/45 would work great.

-Cheers

I add my .02 towards the SXS 'coach gun'. choke is important my Stoeger is r bbl imp cyl left bbl is modified choke. good bush shotty, 12ga mag.
myself I load a shell of 6 roght bbl and left is 2 Buck
also I have pistol back-up but shell carrier holds 4 on stock.

Whatever shotgun you go with I recommend the Winchester home defense round, three 00 buck followed by a hefty slug all in the same shot. Birdshot Winchester universal (8 shot 1 1/8 oz) didn't even penetrate a leather jacket I got from good will at 20 feet. No I was not wearing the jacket and inside were two milk jugs filled with water. Granted I wouldn't want to ever be hit by birdshot but I saw in another post if you have a heftier guy wearing a leather jacket your shot probably isn't going to go in the deepest
