Ok, this might cause some controversy but I will ask this.
What if an armed perp breaks into your house at 3 AM and runs up the stairs loudly yelling “POLICE! WE HAVE A WARRANT!!” Most likely, at 3 AM, some of us may react to this with hesitation and confusion. Is it really the police? Your first instinct might be to lower your weapon or comply with their instructions.
Imagine the person is coming up your staircase with a blinding, high powered flashlight. All you can see is the bright light. You aim your pistol/shotgun and yell “Don’t move!!” The figure keeps the flashlight shining in your eyes and continues to scream “Police! We have a warrant! DROP THE GUN NOW!!!”
What do you do?
First off, I am NOT suggesting people resist police raids. But what if you drop your gun, then the armed home invader chuckles as he and his crew handcuffs you and says “I can’t believe he fell for that.” You surrendered to a ruse and now your family is at their mercy.
I know people will say “dial 911 instantly” but let’s say the break in happens so fast you only have time to grab your shotgun. Let’s say you are home alone or just with your kids sleeping down the hallway. Your cell phone isn't in reach. What if you check and the land line is dead?
Again this is NOT an anti-LEO post. I am not suggesting anyone fire on someone who breaks into your house yelling “Police!” but I’m asking what do you do? Do you comply hoping it really is the police? Do you retreat to another part of the house and try to negotiate or gain some proof they are cops?
