I would not accept living in situation of original OP. MOVE. Even if you are poor, why settle for living in a ghetto, obviously noy for the good job.
I have purchased a cheap land line for the purpose of dialing 911, allowing Local PD to see my address. How hard is it for OP or wife to hit 911 and drop the line. Wife could hide while husband either verifies PD, or delays PD impersonators with hands up, giving PD time to respond.
PD impersonators are a real concern though. There's a YouTube vid of crew wearing FBI t shirts attempting to break into occupied home. I've read of a few more cases.
