Horror story

My son, my cousin and some of their friends (and I) were sitting
around the campfire burning windfall logs, barbequeing ribs,
and swapping stories.

A friend of my uncle's who had been deer hunting came out of the
woods and joined us. As happens around campfires, the subject
turned to horror stories.

Sometime earlier, one of the deer hunter's friends had accepted
an invite to go dove hunting. Lacking a dove gun himself, the
friend had borrowed a 3.5" turkey gun which, the owner assured him,
was plugged to two shots.

They were afield on public land when they were approached by three
game wardens who checked their licenses and guns. One warden asked
to see the turkey gun. He ejected one 2.75" dove load from the firing
chamber and two from the magazine. He asked for another shell and
proceeded to stuff three in the magazine.

To cut to the punchline of this horror story, when they got home,
hanging from the car door handle was a hook
--no, wrong story.

The newbie dove hunter was cited for violation of the two-shot
magazine limit and had to pay a $172.00 fine. Oooo-Eeeee-Ooooo.

The moral of this story is don't make out on lovers lane with a
hook handed serial killer on the loose
--oops, wrong story, again.

The moral is, if you hunt subject to a two shot limit, make sure the
magazine plug is the right size for the shells you are using.

For some wardens, apparently, having a plug in the magazine and only
loading two rounds is not enough.

Before you go afield, make sure the magazine plug is the right size for
the shells you are using.

(I have found a Mossberg 590 with magazine plug intended for Model 500
which actually allowed the 590 to hold four rounds.)

I always plug my guns to 2 3/4" shells (with the exception of a couple 16ga that use 2 1/2 shells). I believe that the wardens around here will check with 2 3/4", even if you are using 3" or 3 1/2". Better safe than sorry.

Also, if you're the person who will be paying the fine, always check on your own. My wife is the only person I trust for everything... and even then I double-check. ;)

homemade plug

I had to admire my work on a homemade plug I made at the last minute. The following day was opening for duck.At the end of the day a warden showed up and checked license and all.As he was checking my gun I noticed he was trying pretty hard to get an extra shell in.As luck would have it, I barely made the plug long enough. I tried later when I got home and it was 1/4" from allowing that extra shell in.Lesson learned, use max shell length to measure, then test when done. DO NOT ASSume it works. IMO the 172 dollar fine was a gift. Around here that would have cost the gun as well as lost license and fine.

I understand the part about being plugged for 3.5" being able to take an extra 2.75". Does this apply if you only have 3.5" shells? Just curious. For some reason, I only have 2.75" guns, but may wind up with a longer chamber someday and was wondering.

We had a young warden who was kinda a ******* (insert insult at your leaser) who used 2 1/2" shells to make sure he could get you. Rummer has it he found someone who had a few of those mini shot shells on him, stuffed like 4 in the mag and hit him with a $2000 fine and took his gun. Probably just a rumor though.

I've heard stories about unpleasant "game wardens" most of my hunting life, but have to say every encounter I've had with them in my home state has always been at least professional and usually friendly. Maybe it's just a midwestern thing.

Good warning.

I've never seen a game warden while out hunting. Border Patrol agents, but they don't care if I have a license, just that I'm not smuggling.

The Brittany and the shotgun usually make it pretty obvious what I'm doing.

I've run into game wardens on several occasions over the years.

They were always polite, professional, and not willing to cut anyone any slack for any reason/excuse when they found a game violation.

Of the guys I know who have encountered a warden when bird hunting, the warden would always check your magazine's 'plug' with your ammo.

If a 3rd one went in,,,, you had a big problem.
