I used to see rifle racks in the rear windows of pickup trucks all the time. Is it because people figured they were advertizing to the thieves, or because it's best not to show your guns to the Police? Just asking. I wonder where one could purchase a rifle rack?

Thanks,
Will

Right on both accounts.

How come "rifle racks" have disappeared?

the short answer is: because you aren't in south dakota.

can buy the racks at most any wal-mart, k-mart, auto parts stores, and a few gun shops.

You still them out west----in this city---your gun would be gone in a New Y(er um Omaha) minute---if left in your vehicle.

There are still a few seen around rural East Texas, but not in the larger cities. I'm not going to put one in my truck here in Dallas, no matter how proud I am of my FAL.

It'd skeer folks, too. Eeeeevil black gun!

Regards,
Rabbit.

I saw them all the time living in southern indiana. About every third truck had a gunrack, and most were full of guns, particulary during hunting seasons. When I was moving to virginia, my relatives informed that virginia is full of rednecks with pickup trucks, and gun racks. Ok, Ive seen rednecks in pickup trucks, Ive seen yuppies in pickup trucks, but Ive only seen one or two gunracks, and neitehr one had a gun in it since I moved here. Frankly, Im dissapointed.

Ok, seriously now, I think it boils down to people not wanting to draw the attention of thieves when their car is parked, and police when thier driving around.

I took mine out(yes, I am a closet Redneck). I viewed it as a big "steal me" sign if I left the guns in the rack.

i keep at least one gun in the rack. usually a 12 bore, but depending on time of year, it could vary widely as what is in it.

i'm not the only one, either... both my neighbors have rifles in their gun racks, and a couple of the pickups i see parked on main street have racks w/ rifles... most of the time the racks contain a 22 or a 12 gauge, some times both, and depending on time of year, may have a pair of deer rifles in lieu of the 12 bore/22 combo, or a 12 gauge and a coyote whacker, or whatever.

scarin' folks? i am not concerned about it... if they are scared, they need to go back to whatever state they came here from. cops? they wanna know what kind of a deal you got on your gun, and where...

its just part of where you live. if guns aren't ever seen, then the general populace will react differently to a gun (including police) than the populace of an area that routinely sees guns...

Hey, I dont give a hoot who sees what, I embrace my redneckedness :D

Of course I don't leave the truck unattended when I have one in the rack.

Used to have the Walmart ones in old truck .. only occasionally using them ... they were useful tho.

Now ...... haven't fitted them up again in present truck ...... reason? Same as no bumper stickers I guess .. unwilling to advertize gun ownership. Tragic really but .. seems ever more ''discrete'' to stay lo-pro most of time these days. But at times . when can do - hi-pro as well!

Now whether there is a rifle or two ... on back seat .... that is another matter - entirely!:p

Saw a rack in a truck (yes - w/ a gun in it) on the way home tonight. First one I've seen since we moved here to NC.

Back in CA and people advised me not to put my NRA sticker on my truck cause they said I'd be a target for a break-in looking for weapons. Of course I still put it up.

Seems to me the inertia from an accident might cause the gun to fly out of the rack and hit you in the head :banghead:

The traditional gun rack seems terribly dangerous in an accident. A Big Sky is a cool thing, though. I always wanted one. And they are very low profile indeed.

Its been like 10 years...no, 15. Wow am I getting old. Anyway, back in college they were building something, and out on the street where you could walk by was one of the worker's trucks. In the cheap plastic gun rack was a scoped, jungle-clipped mini. And the window was rolled down! Totally unattended. Back /then/ I would have thought you couldn't get away with that on a college campus.

Another reason for their demise is the design of newer trucks.

With the headrest being built in to pickups takes room away from the rack if you have the seat all the way back. A two gun rack becomes a one gun rack. (top hooks only)

And with the popularity of extended cab trucks that back window is not as convienent as it once was....unless you have really long arms.

I had a rack in every pickup I owned up until 1994. that was the first truck with the headrests. Now drive extended cab, back seat has headrest and I can't reach it anyway. Easier to throw them on or under the back seat.

mines, just behind the seat. allways has been; one of the secure/trunk lid type with a cable lock through the trigger of the rem. 870

God, I'd feel neeked without my 12 guage...what e'm I spose to do about all the chupacabra's round these parts??????:)

My city (using the term loosely for a community of 20,000) has an ordinance against it, the excuse was it was an "invitation to theft". Twenty miles in any direction they are common. Rural central kansas.

Blame it on the king cab phenomenom. Nowadays everybody wants a truck with a little bit extra room in the back. People seem to want to turn their trucks into SUVs so they can pack all their buddies in. I'm probably the last guy in my state who has a regular cab truck to haul fence materials, animal feed and the like. So my truck has the last gun rack in the state by default.

I have been thinking about installing an Evian cooler, however.

Never had one hit me in the back of the head, even been rear-ended a few times, they hold in fairly tight. I did bugger one up once though, was out getting wood during grouse season and sent a log through the rear window, the .410 stayed in the rack, but it has some "caracter" marks now.

I am on the short side so my headrests dont get in the way, I guess I am lucky that way.

Maybe it just me, but my truck is a truck, nothing more, nothing less. It is a tool, not a status symbol. The only "upgrades" my truck has is good tires and 3/4 ton springs and shocks. The only money I spend on it is for maintenance. Now the $80 I just spent on gas this morning is making me reconsider driving it every day.
