Hey all,

I've got a SAR 1 in a AWB configuration (no bayonette lug, flash hider, folding stock, etc). I was thinking about putting a folding stock on it, but am not really sold ont he idea yet. However, I would love to mount a bayonette on it as well as a flash hider.

Is this even possible or would I have an easier time just buying a post ban AK?
If it is possible, and easy enough to do, is there a good web page with details on what I need to buy and how to install it?

Thanks

Isn't the SAR-1 an import?

If so, simply adding "evil" features may violate 922(r) in that it may then be considered an "imported" AW. To convert an import into an evil rifle legally requires the addition of a certain number of US-made parts.

What if the bayonet is US made?

I'm all about bayonets, since they come in handy so often.
Mostly just because certain people don't want me to have one.

+1 vote for bayonet

I was in a similar situation. I bought Bushmaster's US-made A1 style flash hider and a new Romanian gas block with bayo lug from Kvar. I had a professional gunsmith swap gas blocks and thread the barrel. I also had to order the spring and pin for the front site (it helps index the flash hider). I also put a Romanian side folder on it. Voila, very very evil. Animals run away from me and small children burst into tears in my presence.

Global trades sells a slant brake that is American made. I did discover that Bushmaster's falsh hider is too big to accomodate the bayonet, however. But it looks evvvvviiilll.

Aaah, yes, thats the effect I am looking for. Especially good when I decide to clean the weapons on the front porch while the commie next door has the girl scout troop over.

It is legal to add evil features to a SAR, as long as you don't replace the US made parts with non-us ones.

Wonder if an AK-74 style brake would interfere with a bayonet? They look more eviler...

Just out of curiousity, how much did the gasblock/installation and threading cost? I'm looking to get a Romy AK at the end of the month, and I've got a couple of options...ban-style for $269, or no-ban (straight stock) for $329.

Which is the less expensive way to get evil?

I paid around $50 for the gunsmith to do all that work. I also had to supply my own threading die for some reason...

In my humble estimation, I think the SAR1 is nicer than the WASR10. The WASR10 started life as a single stack and was modified to accept normal capacity magazines. If I had to do it all over again, I would still get the SAR1 and pay extra to have it 'fixed' rather than get the WASR10 with the evil features.

The SAR1's front site doesn't have the bayo lugs on it, so your bayonet would fall off or get stuck in whatever you were sticking. THe '74 front site has the lugs, but I don't think it would work on the SAR1 without some modification. Maybe a smith could weld lugs on an AKM front site?

Check out the "This isn't a Knife..." thread on the "non-firearm weapons" portion of THR. So very evil.

You could tape a picture of Hillary Clinton on the stock.

A SAR-1 with a sidefolder?

Naw, that don't make it evil. It makes the rifle more useful!

I was going to do something different. I wanted to swap gas blocks, putting a Bulgarian gas block/front sight unit on the above SAR-1, until I was told it wasn't an easy thing to do. It turns out the Romanian gas block has it's gas port drilled through the barrel at an angle, while the Bulgarian gas block uses a port drilled at a 90-degree angle to the bore.

My plan was to put a Krinkov-style gas block/sight unit on my SAR-1, then shorten the barrel enough so that it would meet 16.5" with a modified FN-FAL flash hider permanently installed. I've already got enough U.S. made 10-of-20 parts to make it legal, now I want to make it fun, without spending the extra SBR tax stamp. ;)

So how about a AK-74M style side folding polymer stock?

Something you could actually get a cheekweld on.

Of all the sidefolders...

I've considered this Bulgarian skeletonized version to be one of the best for sight alignment/cheek weld:

Unfortunately, there's a snag.

1. The receiver needs to be drilled and riveted for the mechanism.

2. K-Var told me they're sold out of the kits right now. :(

You know, K-Var seems to really like leaving stuff on their site that they haven't carried for... well, years. I've kinda given up on them.

What about *flame suit on* Vulcan Armament's AK accessories? Their AK folding stock looks to be a hell of a lot more stable and stronger than Tapco's silly plastic thingy. Specifically what I'm talking about... Click Here Unfortunately there's no picture, but it's based on the Galil/FAL folder.

Also, check out Ace Ltd.'s AK Section for more ideas and the like. Might be a better option than Vulcan, come to think of it... :scrutiny: :)

Be careful with this. Its SORTA true. In actuality the amount of US-MADE parts in the gun doesnt matter. What matters is how many FOREIGN made parts are in the gun (it must be fewer than 10).

For example lets say that you have an AK with no muzzle device and 9 foreign parts. Now, you thread the muzzle and attach a Bulgarian made slant break. You just exceeded the allowable quantity of foreign made parts and your rifle is now bound by 922. You didnt replace an American part but, you added a foreign part. Now, if you already have a foreign made muzzle brake you can replace it with another foreign made muzzle device no problem.

(note: I suddenly am not sure if it must be "less than 10 foreign parts" or "10 or fewer foreign parts". It doesnt matter THAT much with the SAR-1 since it has the most romanian parts that it can as is, so ADDING one more is a no-no unless you compensate by swapping an American part for a foreign one).

God this is complicated and stupid.

If you add an American made muzzle device you will be fine. The bayonet is gonna be a big PITA though if you want to do it right. You will need to remove your current gas-block and replace it with a "pre-ban" gas block (with bayonet lug). I am about 90% sure that the current gasblock is Romanian so you shouldnt have a parts count issue (in fact i don't know that the gasblock is even considered a "part" by the ATF) but, the process itself is a pain. You would need to press off the front-sight base and the gas block and have the new one pressed on. You would then need to press the front-sight base back on. Additionally you have to install a muzzle-nut or a slant brake in order to mount the bayonet (i am unaware of a flashhider that would allow the mounting of a bayonet). This is work that is best done by someone who knows what they are doing and has the proper equipment. Personally I think it would be easier to just buy a new rifle.

Plan B: You could probably find someone that could weld or silver-solder a bayonet lug onto your current gas-block. This would save all that pressing and fitting. You would still need to have the muzzle threaded and install the nut/slant brake. I am unsure how secure a bayonet lug attached in this manner would work (in fact i don't even know who would do it or if it is really possible) but, it i see no reason why it wouldnt look OK and let you at least put the bayonet on there.

Add the sidefolder, add the bayonet, add a slant brake, add a grenade launcher like the M203 bolted under the barrel, get a drum mag, add a forward mounted holosight a lazer and infrared target designator, only shoot tracers, add a fire selector, cut the barrel down to less than 16", wear a mag bra on your chest, wear all black, wear night vision goggles, wear a ski mask and jump boots, blouse your pant legs....

Have I left anything out?

Wrapping the Romanian sidefolder's buttplate with parachute-cord would make it extra tacti-cool. I'd imagine it would be comfier and less slippery as well, but that's a secondary consideration... -MV

Article from the Maryland AR-15 Site:

How to Wrap with Paracord

[Tech Note: I can't link to the picture because it's already linked to something else, so you'll have to just go to the site]

Couldn't find a good pic of this done on a folding stock, though I'm positive I saw it done somewhere. But the above pic gives the overall impression, and the article seems quite handy. I'd definitely note Bill Brown's advice on applying the cord soaking wet so it dries tight. If anyone ends up trying this on a folding buttstock, I for one would love to see the pics, especially if Gewehr98 does it. Very cool pic G98!

If you want an example of a paracord-wrapped sidefolder...

Just search for the one Badger Arms did on his AK not too long ago. Here is his gun, images borrowed from his posting:
