How do I tell what kind of foregrip to get for my AR15?

Between handstops, vertical grips, and angled grips I don't know what to go. Do some options go better with some shooting techniques? I know with stuff like this there's an element of personal factor but I don't know where to even start. Was thinking I'd just go with the magpul MVP because magpul seems like a pretty safe default option but this feels like the time to defer to more experienced shooters for guidance.

My handguard has mlok slots if that makes a difference.

I use the front of the receiver where it meets the forearm for my off hand.
No foregrip required.

Its all personal preference. I do not like vertical grips. I like to grab the handguard itself and I like fat tubular handguards when I can get them. The only expectation is my 9-inch pistol upper that has a hand stop on it because there is the possibility that I will shoot that without the suppressor and don't want to get my hand in front of the muzzle.

That said if you think you would like one you can do a lot worst than Magpul. For the cost most Magpul products are well made.

I’m a fan of the Bravo Company stubby. It’s a small vertical grip with a slight angle. This seems versatile for how I like to handle my rifle.

Personal preference, but no VFGs here either. I shoot/compete with a modified version of the "choking chicken grip", actually more like a skeet/trap forearm type grip, with my thumb towards the target. I do have a couple handstops on a couple guns, one is on my 3Gun rig for barricade use and the other is on my .300AAC pistol, on the pistol it acts as a handstop.

The only real no-no is turning your pistol into an NFA AOW.

generally there’s been an evolution from nothing to big vertical grips to stubby vertical grips to angled grips to finger stops.

putting your hand way out on the forearm will help you drive the gun but may be suboptimal for various reasons if the targets may shoot back at you.

I use a GGG stubby on a SBR. It's mounted a few inches from the magwell. There's still enough handguard to grab conventionally but it gives a magwell type of grip without fingers potentially fouling the ejection port. Thumb is still over the handguard but it keeps my wrist at a more natural angle and allows me to pull into my shoulder for more stability.

No forward grips on any of the others.

Very much a personal preference. I like large vertical foregrips that I can really get my hand on. And maybe a little storage compartment. I have been using the same CAA AVG grip since my Army days. It is held on with an Allen screw, not a finger disconnect. Which has prevented other soldiers from swiping it. Meets my needs, holds some spare batteries, and had enough space to put the pressure pad for my light on it.

The only "must" is don't put a vertical foregrip on an AR pistol build. Angled grip, handstop, or nothing only.

See that's interesting because if I had just seen a magpul big vertical grip I would have gone with that immediately but the only one they have on offer for mlok 3 inches tall which means my pinky is gonna be hanging off the bottom, all the others are about long. Just trying to remember all the things I've seen used in video games before I tried looking up the Knights Armory vertical grip but that thing is wild how expensive it is, Magpul is 20 bucks and then next thing I know KAC wants 70 bucks for an extra inch with 20 dollar surcharge for OD green.

The newer finger stops that i see everywhere just look so flimsy and minimalist; like they might as well not even be there. Mostly I just want something to help disperse the weight of the rifle a little bit better.

I’m using the Daniel defense one cause it came on the rifle.
Just post a want to buy thread. There’s prob lots of dudes who bought them and aren’t using them who would part with something cheap.

I like the Magpul MLok AFG and have them on several rifles and pistols. On rifles, they index your hand and then I wrap around the hand guard at that point.

I also have some folding grips on a couple of rifles…I like them verticals on home defense guns.

As others have already stated it's a personal preference. I prefer vertical grips, I find they are more comfortable for me, angled grips are my second choice but my 7.62x39 AR has a bipod so it only has rail covers. I use both Magpul RVGs and Danial Defense vertical grips.

Don't use grips. Even when I train and shoot a ton of ammo off hand I still don't use one, you will find that besides the cool factor it becomes more of a obstacle if you shoot a lot from the bench when you are at the range. I would recommend that you may be better off just using the sling if you have one.

Hateto say it, but if you really want to know what you like best, you're going to have to try all 3. Personally, I like nothing. Or a sling. But I'm casual shooting/ hunting. I do have an 8" sbr that I've been thinking about trying g a vfg on. I tried an afternoon on a 16" rifle for a while. Got rid of it because I didn't love it and it was just extra weight.

If it's a heavy rifle I like the traditional long style vertical grip. On short pistols a hand stop. On my lighter hunting rifle I prefer nothing. Just gotta see what works for you best.

I'd suggest getting a cheap one like the magpul. If you don't like it, you won't feel bad cutting it down to a nub/handstop just to try it. If you still don't like it, you can get one of the angled ones.

I’m a sling guy with my AR.’s, no foregrips for me.

Some of my guys use the magpul angled grip.

Others the BCM stubby.

The best part is you can unscrew the M loc parts easily so whatever you choose can be moved where you like it.

Stay safe.

Rifles are pretty free in configuration. An AR PISTOL is not, there are significant complications, some are flatly illegal, and it's a minefield. Until the Form 4999 mess is resolved, it could change overnight. I do NOT run any "grips" on my AR pistol whatsoever.

Wanting a grip and having it actually succeed in doing what is expected will require being very specific about what the intended improvement should be, and then accepting it will stick out there and interfere with other uses. There is no "all good" solution, it's always "mostly good with a downside." AR accessories are mostly like that - and why they are sold. Keeping in mind until the M4 no issue AR rifle was equipped with a grip or stop for decades, it's an accessory to enhance a specific use which is often limited in application. "3 Gun barrier," "handstop for short pistol barrel," etc.

What exactly does the OP intend to improve?
