There is no one single design. The Schmitt-Rubins, Ross, and some of the later Steyr/Mannlichers, as well as the modern 96 Mauser had cam tracks that rotated the bolt or bolt head into locking recesses same as a regular turnbolt. The weird Blaser kind of expands a collet into lockup engagement as the bolt is closed, and collapses it as it is pulled back.
Earlier Mannlichers had locking blocks that pivoted down from the bottom of the bolt into locking shoulders.
As I understand it, the Winchester Lee Navy's whole bolt tipped up and down in and out of lockup as the pivoting bolt handle rocked it through its movement, but I am not real familiar with the details.
