I have been shooting the heck out of my 1911 .22 Ciener. It gets pretty hot after a few hundred rounds but it has not failed yet. How hot is too hot. I don't want to damage my gun. Is it possible to damage it? I believe its all aluminum which is supposed to dissipate heat pretty good just like many engine components.

If it's like my Ciener, the slide is aluminum (to keep the weight low enough for a .22 to cycle it) and the barrel is steel.

I believe you can damage the barrel if you get it hot enough, but I don't know how many hundred (thousand?) rounds it would take.

Generally, if it's too hot to put your hand on it, I take a break and shoot something else. I know the latest thing is Ruger .22's with large magazines, and I can imagine some of them get rather toasty...

While I've never heard of someone managing to "cook off" a .22 rimfire, I suppose it's possible. At that point, I would venture to say you had managed to get it too hot. :)

I've never gotten mine that hot, I'm not too worried about it. One advantage it has is that little shock buffer. I don't think these are always necessary, but in the case of THIS gun, which is deliberately lightened to be able to cycle, I think that little rubber washer does a lot to cushion the slide/frame impact, making stress fractures a lot less likely. Also protection against hot ammo. (Which I always use.)
