How many 40 S&W rounds does it take to stop a tiger?

The officers all fired their .40-caliber handguns, striking the tiger an unknown number of times.

My guess: 12 shots hit and killed the tiger. Siberian tigers are big

Anybody know what the SFPD carries as a standard 40 load?

My guess is those four officers probably had a LOT of adrenaline flowing. I would be willing to bet that all four shot dry or darn close to it.

Think about it man, its a freakin' tiger loose and they had already found one dead body and had just witnessed it jump back on the mauled victim. Dry? Huh, I would have been doing some be-yootiful reloads. Four officers with (I think) Glocks (perhaps Beretta 96?), waaaaaay more than 12 rounds fired, you betchum.

I can promise you I would NEVER have responded to that call with just my sidearm.

I'm thinking the shotgun would have come out of the trunk.

"Never get out of the boat"

Did they ever determine what provoked it to attack ? I heard speculation on the news , but nothing for sure .

LOL That's exactly what I said to my wife when she told me about this story this morning. Of course she had no idea what I was talking about, but I walked off quoting it..

As for rounds fired I will be more interested to see how many actually hit the target vs rounds fired. Oddly enough it seems to me, at least from the armchair quarterback position, that I'd be more freaked out in combat with a tiger than a gang of hoodlums :)

Never heard what provoked it but if I had to guess, being a wild animal locked up in a cage it's whole life.

Funny, I have been thinking the same thing. Tiger? Witnessed dead body? Lots of places to hide? In the DARK? Shudder!! Oh, and +1000 on bringing the 12 gauge along.

For what it is worth, we just heard a news report centered on a family who were in the park during (and after) the whole event. They were at several venues within the park (exhibits, cafe, gifts) and were never once asked to leave nor told there was a problem. They walked past SFPD who also failed to notify them! Their claims as to time frame were verified on camera by showing the times and dates on zoo cafe and gift shop recipts.

Methinks the SF Zoo (and the city) needs to seriously rethink their emergency response training. Leaving potential victims around w/o a clue is asking for more lawsuits than the major ones that are already going to be filed.

As to what provoked it, the yute who was killed (17 year old from San Jose, idiot, sorry for my judgement call) was apparently witnessed taunting the animal. There are still conflicting reports as to whether or not the two mauled victims (19 and 20 years of age, also from SJ) were involved or just innocent bystanders.

Sorry, but if your 17 and provoking a loose tiger, if you dont have a serious mental disability, its hard for me to feel too bad.

I do know of a 400# black bear that was killed with 1 round from a .40 S&W by a poacher a few years ago. Shot out of the window of his truck. Yes, he was caught and prosecuted

I don't know about tigers, but I killed a 200 lb boar with 2 shots from my g-27 using 180gr. Remington golden sabers. I went aroud behind him and put 2 more in the back of his neck before approaching him though.

The original question...

reminds me of a Ron White joke. He was thrown out of a bar. He states he don't know how many bouncers it would have taken to kick his a** but he know how may they were going to use.... 6.

My thought are... I don't know how many .40 caliber bullets it would have taken, but I got a pretty good idea how many I would have used... all that I had.

Here's a "bear killed by .40" story, but this bear only weighed 150 lbs.:

I know a few SF cops and will try to get the skinny

My educated guess is that the dead kid didn't do anything but run when he saw a loose Tiger, and that the 4 or 5 cops emptied at least 115 rounds of .40 from their Berettas and hit kitty maybe 4 or 5 times and it was an act of divine intervention that saved their lives.
Notice the wall of silence on how many rounds fired and how many hits.

I've shot with a large number of LEO over the years...with out expection, the ones that did not have any firearms exp or miltary training before they became LEOs could not hit the side of a barn from inside the barn.

I just wanted a f'in mango!

Bummer for the kids, but for some reason; I think they probably brought on the fight.

According to the news this morning, they are starting an investigation to determine if the tiger was released on purpose

Report said the dead one may have been dangling his leg over the fence, taunting the tiger. Hope some video comes out. If so, it's sad the tiger had to get shot. Only following it's instincts. If it did jump out, then they need to remodel the enclosure!
