Sure is frustrating that neighboring states cannot accept each others, especially since I live about 5 miles from the Oregon boarder. :banghead::banghead:
If we were going to go about getting this changed does anyone out there know where to start? Something i have always wondered but never really looked into.
One. I live out west-ish where you can't accidentally walk to another state and I have reciprocity with ~28 states. All of the states which I visit or would visit are included in those.
Not too bad, unless I need to drive to MN. It would be a pretty long detour
So how do you get permits in other states. Took me a while to figure out the steps to get my own state's permit (I only wanted to go downtown once), but hadn't even started looking at getting a license out of state. How would I get a South Carolina license if I live in Georgia?
I have 4, New Mexico, Florida, Utah and Texas even though New Mexico and Texas cover the same states as well as each other. I have familly there and and decided the extra training was worth it. I used to have one for California when I lived there.
Just a Va resident, covers everywhere I'd want to go though.
As an aside, I just found out you can take the required course for a permit in Va ONLINE! They even allow you to print your certificate and the necessary forms to send to the local PD.
I'm all for self defense and the ability to do so, but I'm also for proper training in usage AND law; I think it would keep a lot of nice, yet un/mis informed people out of prison. I think it a necessity to at least take the class in person and be able to tangibly learn the basics of firearm safety.
Just my Georgia Firearms License it covers here & 23 other states if I'm not mistaken. I never go anywhere much anyway but it does cover the whole southeast other than South Carolina. South Carolina does not give non resident permits & wont recognize anyone elses permits.
I am going to have 3. VA which I have and waiting on Fl and UT. I am planning to get my NV permit when I visit friends in Las Vegas soon. As someone stated, reciprocity between states is a fluid thing, so I got 3. ie, NV stopped recognizing UT permits last July.
The sad thing is I live in MD, which is a "may issue" state, and unless you are wealthy or politically well connected, you don't "need" or deserve a permit as far as MD is concerned. So I can carry in every state connected to MD, but not MD.
Pathetic. There is a grassroots organization trying to change the law to shall issue but it's an uphill battle. Its called maryland shall issue or MSI and web site is:
Sorry Charliehustle I was wrong they do honor NC permits. They just don't honor GA ones. I'm not sure if this has been posted but anyone who wants to check out reciprocity can go to www.handgunlaw.us/
I have two: Texas and non-resident PA. I got the PA when TX was running behind on renewals....didn't want to have my license lapse and have no way to carry. I ended up getting my renewal in plenty of time but it was cheap insurance.
