USP9 thanks for saying my post was cute that means a lot to me. Also you've already answered your own question. You said LEO's are the only one's who need to carry back up mags. So if one ever gets into a gun fight with an LEO he'll probably need some back up mags? Right? Well, I hope that clears things up for you. Be safe out there...

Well, I see the truely informed and eloguent debaters have shown up.

Usp9, been in a lot of gunfights have ya?

No, not many, just one and multiple gun incidents without shooting. But that isn't the point. The point you made is that when facts aren't supporting your arguement resort to sarcasm and inuendo. Good job, we were all enlightened.

It may be fun to practice and gun writers get paid by the word, but documented factual history of defensive firearm use shows spare mags and reloads are a fiction.

Er, no, that's not quite the way things happened in this thread. The OP asked how many magazines one carried and then asked for information as to why you made your individual decision.

You made the never statement not just in support of what you do, but to the effect that anyone who did carry at least one spare magazine was wrong in doing so.

Yet, there have been several references that demonstrate your never statement to be in error.

My main concern is that there may be people that experience routine malfunctions and practice changing mags in the mistaken belief that there is time to do that when under attack. There isn't. These hostilities occur in seconds, at the range of a few feet and are instinct driven.
How do you know? Have you been involved in any?

Why are you so concerned with what others are doing? Are you an expert? Have you written any books on the subject?

If you have made the comittment to go armed, then carrying an extra magazine isn't that much more bothersome,

Yeah...it is. At least for some. Including me. I carry enough junk already. I've got my Walther P99, a folding knife/multitool, cell phone, keys, wallet, surefire E2D, and OC on my keychain. And sometimes my ipod. That amount of stuff is pushing it already, and I'm considering leaving the E2D at home. I deliver pizzas though and the flashlight does come in handy. I know some people like to wear their camo hats, 5.11 shirts and pants, and have all of their "emergency" stuff hanging from their belt and stuffed into every pocket they have, but I'm not one of those people. I like to look and feel like a normal person, and not be weighed down by a bunch of tactical wizbangitry.

Reloads just seem like playing dress-up. Something to give you that feeling of "man I'm so much more awesome and bad-ass than these sheeple" while you're out at the gas station. But in reality, I don't see a reload ever being used. It's a lot of effort for little to no gain IMO.

Like others have said, the chance of you ever being in a situation where you need your weapon is highly unlikely. In addition, the chance that you will need to fire you weapon is exponentially more unlikely. And further still, the chance that you will be in a situation where you need you weapon, and you need to fire it, and it fails or you somehow run out of ammo is so far out there in terms of reality, it just doesn't warrant carrying around another loaded mag all the time everywhere I go.

This thread is going astray...

Depends on the gun.

For my HK P2000sk, this is it:

-One extra magazine (ten rounds 9x19 Federal Hydrashok)
-No mag holster just yet. Right now I'm carrying it in one of my cargo pockets.

For my Sig P229 (when it's "Florida cold" and I can wear a coat to conceal it):

-two extra magazines (12 rounds .40 S&W Federal Hydrashok)
-No mag holster. When I carry this baby, I wear a cross-draw shoulder rig which accomodates two mags on the right hand side.

For the Taurus 605:

-two speed loaders (five rounds .357 Speer Gold Dot short barrel)
-Cargo pockets

I generally carry about 24-25 rounds, including the ones in the gun.

For a revolver, that means the load in the cylinder and three speedloaders or speed strips (or any combination thereof.)

For a flatgun, it depends on the capacity of the gun. An eight-shot single stack? Mag in the gun and two spares. A fifteen-shot wondernine? Mag in the gun and one spare.

I currently only have one autoloader, a SIG P220. I carry two spares, one in a single mag holder on the belt (weak side), and one in the left-hand pants pocket.
