Depends how I'm carrying and how much I'm wearing. No excuse for not having extra magazines in the car. If I'm carrying off-body (say, in a laptop computer case) it's easy to carry an extra couple of magazines in there, along with some other gear. If I'm carrying rear inside waistband under a light jacket, it's not going to be too easy to keep extra magazines on me -- unless I concealed the magazines in a ruck, for example. But I'll answer 10+ with no extra mag, even though I usually have extra mags around, just because I don't ALWAYS have an extra mag on me. Fifteen rounds is a lot. I used to carry a five shot revolver, fer crying out loud -- later, an eight round .380. Now I carry a 92FS. Fifteen rounds of 9mm Para is rather comforting by compare.

Interesting results thus far, and over 100 people have voted. It appears that the vast majority of us carry 1 mag or no mags, with just a handful of us being willing to tote two or more extras. It's interesting that with the higher-capacity guns it's an even split between 1 mag and no mags, but there's about a 3:2 ratio on this for the lower-capacity guns. Similarly, there's a 3:2 ratio for carrying multiple extra mags between the low-cap and higher-cap shooters. Thanks to all who voted!

But I couldn't vote, because there was no
Always carry an extra mag regardless of capacity

For the extra mag, not the ammo.

19+1 in the gun, and another in the center console. whether or not my magazine comes with me depends on where i am in relation to i-20 and i-285.

I like to carry two extra magazines with whatever handgun I carry. All my handguns hold over 10 rounds. Some may say that is overkill, but after hearing that report of a guy getting shot by an officer 22 times, 17 hits were center mass, and the guy was still able to get off four rounds, I have a good reason to carry that many rounds.

I would like to carry an extra mag but I generally pocket carry and don't have enough pockets. The strong side front has the pistol only, and I need the weak side front for a Leatherman-like tool and money clip. I would not want to add a magazine to the weak side front because I might end up pulling it out and blowing my concealment when reaching for my money.

I'm amazed that no one has answered "NY reload" yet. Thats what I do. BUG is actually lighter than an extra mag. If something goes wrong I can go straight to it without worrying about the malf being a product of the gun and possibly not of the magazine on my main carry weapon. Granted I dont have as many rounds in my BUG as I would in an extra mag, but (17+1)+(6+1)= dead badguy or bad guys.... hopefully.

I carry 2 extra mags for the mag, not the ammo.

because Murphy is a bastard, I want to go home after the incident with a loaded weapon, and I have several friends that carry the same pistols.

I also carry a BUG as a NY reload when possible (attire permitting,) and one reload for it for the same reasons.

Maybe your gun is tested and works fine.

What about your ammo?

I shoot a portion of every box of ammo I carry to make sure, at least as best I can, that the whole box isn't defective.
My cousin got a box of Win Silvertips when they were newer and they hadn't worked out the bugs...he had a whole box with bad primers.
I inspect the ammo to make sure its external dimensions are correct and there are no burrs or obvious defects.

Factory loads could have been stored improperly at the shop, and who knows where its been before it gets to you. I've read of factory loads without flash holes, and personally shot Winchester loads that had out of spec cases that caused malfunctions (was OAL, Win White box .45acp.)
These are just a few examples.

I like to use an OAL gage or field strip my pistol and drop rounds in the chamber by hand to make sure they all chamber correctly. I had a Cor-bon load that had a burr on the case mouth, and I've had GI surplus 5.56 with a misshapen shoulder that would not chamber properly.

A BUG (in a different caliber, dif ammo) and spare mags for your primary to go to in case of a malfunction only make sense.

Regarding mags -
Mags get dropped (when carrying, reloading, mag catches get activated during carry sometimes) and feed lips dented, or floor plates pop off and your mag explodes on the deck, springs give out at bad times...etc
Strange debris, pocket lint, sand, and other crap finds its way into your EDC equipment even when you are careful and are constantly cleaning, maintaining it, and using proper holsters/mag pouches.
You carry long enough and you see strange stuff happen.

If a malfunction occurs my first reaction is to do a Rip-Work, in which case I'm changing the mag because I don't have time in a firefight to diagnose problems. Problems which can occur even with tested and maintained equipment.

So yeah, I could on...but you get the point.

I carry spare mags/reloads and a spare weapon when I can.

with my lcp, i ALWAYS carry an extra mag. but with my 12+1 45acp, or my wifes 40 s&w 15+1, i dont feel the need. i am really not very likely to ever have to use any of them, so i feel pretty confident about this. if i lived in a big city, or in a bad part of town, i would carry as much as i thought my belt (and pants) would support.:D

I useta rib on folks that carried a second mag.

"What, you don't think that fifteen plus one is enough for whatever problems you're likely to find? HAR HAR! "

One day, somebody took the time to edumacate me on their rationale for the second mag (having nothing to do with extra rounds on hand and having everything to do with being able to swap out a magazine during a stoppage in case the mag caused the stoppage).

I carry an extra mag now.

For the extra mag, not the ammo.
Exactly so.

Self Defense vs Firefight

Most of the time I carry a "10 or less," but sometimes a Glock instead.

I don't carry extra mags because my opinion says that if you're not if Law Enforcement or in the military, if you need more than 10 rounds, you're not in a SD situation - you're in a firefight. :scrutiny: You have no business there.

Just MY opininon.

I too carry an extra magazine due to the possibility of a stoppage that can most quickly be dealt with by dropping the mag in the gun, clearing the jam, and placing the extra mag in the gun.

In a gunfight, time is a precious commodity.

Ken Hammond, stopped the shooter in the Trolley Square shooting, he locked empty and he DIDN'T HAVE A SPARE MAGAZINE.
I thought Ken H. was a LEO, perhaps off-duty...He's paid to sustain & prolong the confrontation until the conflict is resolved...He should have had a spare mag or B.U.G.
However, I'm talking civilian CC and our parameters are a far cry different than law-enforcement.
I say this: If you can carry a spare mag or if a B.U.G. is legal in your state and you can conceal it in a manner that doesn't interfere with your task at hand: go for it...Just not for me....:)
