I'm curious to know how many people carry extra magazines for their concealed handgun. Does carrying a higher-capacity handgun change the answer? In other words, are we more likely to carry reloads if our carry weapon has a lower capacity?

I just keep an extra 15 rounder in the glove box for my S&W 5906. The 5906 is a big heavy gun to start with and I don't carry an extra mag unless im going places were I don't feel even remotely safe. That said, 15 rounds of 9mm JHP is plenty to carry.

I have plenty around at home and I will throw an extra in my coat pocket but I also think if I need to reload after 8+1 .45s I am probably alread toast.

I think that having at least one extra mag (loaded) should be standard practice. This is regardless of initial mag capacity. You never know when Murphys Law is going to slap you in the face. Of course, I download all of my single stack mags by 1 round and any double stack mags by 2 or 3 rounds. In terms of how many mags should be kept loaded...I guess it all comes down to practicality/need. For law enforcement, I would have nothing less than 2 or 3 loaded mags as spares. For HD, it can vary. After all, swapping out ammo on a monthly basis, then having to fire off such said rounds after a period of time, can become quite costly.

Either way, I keep at least one loaded mag as a spare...regardless of capacity.

I didn't vote because I always carry a spare mag, regardless of it's capacity.
I always carry an extra magazine any time I carry an autoloader.

Not for the extra ammo, but for the extra magazine.

Lots of bad things can happen to a magazine in the course of human events.

And Mr. Murphy says if you only have one with you, it will!

No extra regardless of capacity. If I worried about a malfunction I'd prefer a BUG as a reload, but I don't do that either.

I carry a Sig P229, 13+1, and two extra 13 round mags. This gives me a good weight balance on my belt, not to mention 40 rounds.

i have 2 guns that i normaly carry, either or, not both at the same time. either an xd service model which is 12+1 or a kahr k-40 which is 6+1 either way i carry a spare mag if at all possible.

Off Duty I prefer to carry the Primary Pistol with two reloads, but will sometimes have to make do with one reload.

I also carry a BUG, at least one, but prefer two. Each BUG has a reload as well. I have had guns fail on me, and expect Mr. Murphey to show up when I least want to see him.

Always carry one extra mag. Not for the extra rounds but in the slight case the mag would have some sort of mechanical issue, I don't want to be caught with a neutralized weapon and a smile!

Always have 2 extra mags on me when I carry. Doesn't matter what gun I am currently using, although 95% of the time it will be a 1911.

Interesting. I wonder..Why NOT have at least one extra loaded mag around? Is it that much of an inconvenience?

For those who truly believe in the reliability of their magazines (even the best can fail), ever consider that the ammo carried within might not prove as reliable when the sh*t hits the fan? Would it not be better to have a spare in case your current "trusty" mag/ammo drops a bomb on you 2 or 3 rounds into a gunfight?

Mags have been known to fall out and get lost.

Or drop-kicked across the street when a fumbling attempt to catch one failed.

And I have had the base-plate welds let go on a GI 1911 mag and puke it's guts out on the ground in the middle of a string.

Sxxx Happens, and I want a spare mag with me when it does!

Imagine this: Attacked, you draw, mag release accidentally hit, mag drops, explodes on the ground.

You now have a weak single-shot pistol to save your life because you're dumb and lack foresight.

Oops.

Using your scenario, you're "toast" in a late-nite WallyWorld parking lot (knife drawn-couple of Cholos coming towards you) even if you have mags sticking out of your jockey shorts...
Practice, Know yourself, and above all Know your weapon....
For a LEO whose job is to put an ultimate solution to this scenario, mags are a necessity; not for the average "Joe"...In the above situation, if you fumbled your mag release, tell me: would you do better with a "speed reload" and do you have time?
You best be running/seeking cover because you already blew your chance...
Most of us do are best just to conceal our pistol of choice, and it can be difficult especially in the hot summer. In NM, no B.U.G. only 1 can be concealed.:)

well, once i get my second 1911, I'm gonna Bruce Willis it with the double shoulder rig!

EDIT: No extra mags probably.

i never carry extra regardless of capacity, be it a 5 shot .38 or glock 23 with 13 + 1.
