Never fired 22 short or 22long and was wandering if they were any quieter than cci 22lr 36grain ammo. Also i am just curious about how many grains they have in them.
You can buy CCI CB shorts and CB longs which have no powder in the case. Just propel the bullet with a stiff amount of priming compound. About the same power.
Out of a longer rifle barrel they make very little noise. Not all that loud from a pistol barrel either.
Can also get RWS BB caps. .22 cartridges that are about half the length of a short. Not as potent as a CB short.
I keep CB shorts around for pest control around the house. They have more than enough punch to kill skunks and yard digging armadillos.
To answer the original question, .22 Shorts generally have 29-grain bullets, as do .22 Longs (albeit with a bit more powder, hence more power). Nominally, .22 Long Rifles have 40-grain solid bullets, or 38-grain hollowpoints. Nowadays, however, they are available in different bullet weights from, IIRC, 36 grains to 60 grains.
Both CCI short and long CBs DO have powder in them, but at a much reduced charge. They are much quieter than regular rimfire shells. It is the Aquilla Colibri and Super Colobris that have no powder in them and, from a rifle, they are quieter than most air rifles.
