For the purposes of this poll lets define 'gun shop' as a retail business that primarily specializes in selling firearms and related products. Wal-Mart doesn't count.

Let's define 'near' as being within a 30 minute drive of your home.

Wow! I googled guns from my address and there are 6-8 that are within a 30 minute ride. I didn't even know most fo those existed and I'm going to have to check them out. Thanks for asking the question!

Remember this is NJ. I voted 0 but forgot about the Bullet Hole. It's on the edge of the 30 minute circle for me.

2, one I will not go in, and the other is atleast 25% more then anyone else in town.

Then again 30 mins is a relative term, during rush hour that could mean less then a mile, or 25 if you don't hit any red lights.

I've got four (not counting pawn shops) within two miles. High Country Guns & Knives, Bill's Trading Post, The American Gun Shop, & J&G Sales.

After that there are a whole bunch right at the 30 minute limit. The High Noon Indoor Shooting Parlor and Prescott Valley Guns in Prescott Valley, and in Chino Valley there are more I've yet to check out.

According to this search tool, there are at least 25 FFLs within 1 mile of my zip code :what:.

I've got 1. For a town of 25,000 that is not enough. Especially when the gunshop is so dang small. Oh well, what can I do about it.

Wow, I had no idea. Using that tool I found 21 within 8 miles. 1 is a Walmart, 1 Kmart and 1 dicks. I have only been to a few of them.

Three that I know of. One is across a state border, so no pistolas. One is overpriced (ex. Bersa .380 for $300) and open two days per week. The remaining one is my preferred vendor.

according to this

Locally that link shows

  1. one store that's been closed for a decade and a half. The owner's murder was the big story here in 1992.

  • Another guy died 4 or 5 years ago.

  • Klunk mart hasn't sold guns in years.
  • ditto walmart

I put down 5:
Paterson Gun Smithing
Bullet Hole
Meltzer's
Ramsey Outdoor
Ray's

Meltzer's and Ramsey are not dedicated gun shops, but they are not big box. I included them because I've never set foot in either until I started with firearms.

Would this include sporting goods chain stores that have guns or are you focused on local businesses? IE Scheels, Sportmans warehouse, etc?

9 within 13 miles. I live in the suburbs of Boston. Not bad.

Dope

Theirs more than 20 gun shops within 30 minutes of my house not including pawn shops & big5's
I live 10 minutes from Cabelas and theirs a Sportsmans wearhouse 20 minutes N/E and 20 minutes S/W of me :)

9 within the 30 minute commute you described, and I live in San Fransisco Bay area. (East Bay, to be precise. This matters because one of my favorite places to shop is in Pacifica -- 45 minutes away)

According to qwestdex.com, 73 within 25 miles.

That's Big box stores, Ma and Pa stores, pawn shops, gun smiths, and shops that sell gun accessories.

The real question should be

How many good gunshops are within 30 minutes drive of your home. There are 8 gunshops within 30 minutes drive of my home. There are 3 that I do business with on a regular basis because they still know what customer service is and how to treat people with dignity and respect.

The other 5 shops I have been to a few times and they are always rude and condescending to the customers and they try to rob you blind on gun and ammo prices as well as gunsmithing services. I don't know how some of these people came by the thought that they are gunsmiths. I see 25 year old kids that took an 18 month mail order course on gunsmithing and think they are gunsmiths. Most of them want $100+ an hour and half the time all they do is box your gun up and send it to the manufacturer or a real gunsmith then add the $100 per hour to whatever they were charged by the person that fixed the gun.:what:

Don't get me wrong, I don't expect people to kiss my behind and I don't mind paying a fair price for the gun, ammo and accessories I want. I also don't mind paying a decent wage to what I consider a real gunsmith.

What I can't stand is when I walk into a gun shop and the 3 or 4 people behind the counter completely ignore you while they all BS with one person about something that is not making the shop any money nor bringing in any new customers. They act like you're not there and then get all grumpy if you ask one of them to get off their fat ass and help you.

Good guns, good knowledge of guns (at least the ones your selling), and reasonable prices keep customers interested in a gunshop but what really brings the customer back everytime and what might make them willing to pay a little more even if the gun is $75 cheaper 20 miles down the road is good, polite customer service. You treat me nice and I'll pay the slightly inflated price you have on a gun I want and probably buy 500 rounds of ammo and a holster or sling to boot.:D

If your all uppitty and a smartass just because you want to show off to the other nitwits behind the counter with you, I'll walk out every time and I don't give a damn how much cheaper your guns are.:cuss:

Molon Labe,
Joe

I envy the guys that have 6+, out here in the sticks we are fortunate to have 2 that rape us on prices and a Walmart that even the 2 others buy ammo from.

Nothing is 30 minutes from my house, but a ton are 30 miles or a bit less.

Getting to them over the semi-paved, winding cowpaths that pass for roads here in Pennsyltucky typically takes about 40 minutes.:)

6 exactly. Unfortunately, all the good ones I like to visit are 45 minutes or more away.
