How many loaded mags?

At home, my guns are for SELF-DEFENSE and my loaded round count reflects this. I don't live in a warzone, and i'm not likely to be taking the fight to the street. That said, i don't have small children, and I've always believed that there are few things more pointless than an unloaded gun, so the few firearms i do keep at home stay loaded, with at least one reload close at hand.

Most of my guns actually live at a family member's house, since they have a very big, very sturdy safe and live in a better neighborhood. But i've got what i may foreseeably need. ;-)

I only have my Ruger SR9-C loaded up for HD. One 17 round mag and one 10 round mag, so 27 rounds of 9mm on tap. I don't keep any rifles loaded.

Ruger 10/22 - 50 rd. mags (2 ea.) - solids & HP's (4 total).
AK - 4 - 40 rd. banana's with mixed JHP's, FMJ's, and PSP's, plus 2 - 75 rd. drums with same mix of ammo. I also have about 50 stripper clips prepped for reloading into the mags.
A .25, a .32, and a .380 all have only 2 clips each as they are all over 40 years old (the .32 is about 80!) and that is all they came with.

ALL of them.

Being loaded does NOT stress them - loading AND unloading - continuously - stresses them.

Besides, at the moment of truth, there ain't no callin' "Timeout" with the badguys, while you do what you SHOULDA done when you BOUGHT the firearm!!!

Err, umm ... so in a firefight how many mags do you think you could consume before the Bad Guys got YOU?

Surely in a Bad Situation only a few vital seconds would count - possibly 2 or 3 mags max?

Or have I misunderstood something about the US threat environment?

My highest probability of HD use on humans is a home invasion - so I'd say 4 BGs maximum. In all probability, three will run like hell when the first one dies, but magazines are cheap and they might as well be loaded. An empty gun makes a lousy hammer.

Train and prepare for worse that will happen, and you'll be a whole lot better off than underestimating reality.

One mag in my semi auto, one spare. Loaded cylinder in each of my .357s with one loaded speedloader, loaded shotgun -1 in the tube, plus 5 extra on the buttstock.

i dont plan on getting in any 1hr shootouts so I figure 10-20rds is more than enough

Seriously just a handful since "one is none and two is one."

3 speedloaders of .357 and a couple rifle mags unless I'm prepping for a match then it's 6-8 rifle mags or 10 + pistol mags.

AR-15: 6x30rds
Glock: 3x15rds
Shotgun: 5rdz, tube fed

Much like many others, I don't see the point of buying magazines just to leave them empty.

I figure its no harder storing them loaded than empty and full magazines might be useful. Also if you have to bug out it could save some valuable time. I just don't see a reason to keep them empty. Why would you keep them empty? Seriously why? I see people snickering about loaded magazines so why keep them empty?

I cannot imagine a scenario that would require 12 loaded rifle mags that could pass the laugh test.
I have no loaded magazines at all. I have a cylinder full of .357mag. If that turns out not to be enough I'll be sure to post an apology.:neener:

One loaded + one spare for my EDC. Same with my HD handgun. One loaded + 3 spare for primary HD rifle. That plus 6 rounds of 12 gauge should be able to keep some burglars away for a bit :D

I don't like to load when I go shooting. I like to shoot. I load when watching TV.
This. I keep 150 rounds in magazines for my AR, not because I anticipate getting in a protracted firefight, but because I don't want to mess around loading them when I'm ready to go to the range. Likewise I have a half dozen loaded mags for my G17 and G21, several loaded speedloaders for my S&W 686 and 629 (need to get some for my 617, though).

It's also a matter of ammo selection. I keep a mag of fmj and a mag of JHP, depending on if I need to fire through walls,"interior" the exterior walls are concrete. So nothing is getting out. But if I have BG's outside my bedroom door, I could easily put several rounds through the plasterboard walls, or door. as no one else is in the house. Same with cars. If someone pulled up to your home, and shot at you from a vechicle, you have the option of switching to a FMJ round. I need to put that foil on my windows, it will slow down if not stop a 9mm round. I have been looking at some different companys that make the stuff. It's expensive, but less than bullett proof glass.
But most times after a shot or two are fired, everyone runs out the nearest exit. So having them is more mental than actually necessary. If you have 15 round mags, 2 should be more than enough. 1911's may require 3 or 4, if the fight continues outside.

Hmmm...

A loaded, holstered, 6+1 small-framed semiauto pistol in my nitestand (which I have carried).

A loaded pump-action shotgun with five rounds in the tube (empty chamber) and five in the sidesaddle hidden in a closet.

A loaded, holstered, 8+1 medium-framed semiauto w/a spare mag in its attached pocket, somewhere (which I've carried).

An unloaded takedown pump-action 10+1 capable .22 Mag. carbine truck gun with a speedloading tube and a box of 50 FMJ cartridges.

I have no loaded rifle mags.

I have two AR-15's and maintain 18 loaded 30-round mags (16 in bandoliers, one in each rifle), and six loaded 20-round mags.

I also have two 1911's, both in Condition 1, and maintain 12 spare loaded mags.

Gym, the fight should never "continue outside" in a home/self defense shooting scenario. If they are fleeing, i don't know of any place in the US where you're in the right to press the attack.

If you believe it likely, or even possible, that you would need to engage multiple targets who are dug in and on the offensive against you outside your home, you either need to re-analyze your mindset or find a new place to live. No offense is intended.

In a HD/SD scenario, your goals are/should be, in order of priority:

1. Protect yourself
2. Cause the intruder to flee the premises (thereby removing the threat)
3. Eliminate the threat through use of force.

The tricky point is the (typically split-second) transition between 2 and 3, where the other party decides whether to flee or not. If they run, the situation is resolved in the eyes of the law. Going after them makes you the aggressor.
Sucks, i know.

10 is a nice round number. I have surpassed that number... SHTF/range mags outnumber defense magazines by a large margin. The only exceptions are rimfire plinkers and my 9mm STI Spartan, which is a recent purchase. And being my first 9mm 1911, I cant cant use my other mags as I have in the past.

Geez, I only have 1 handgun loaded with 1 extra mag. You guys must be in a bad Zombie area!!! LOL
No, I do not. But I don't want to be loading magazines when walkers are knocking on my door.
