A carry gun needs to be light, small and comfortable, or else you will not enjoy carrying it and will often opt to leave home without it. You will have to trade something to get the weight and size down. For many this means a smaller cartridge (hence the popularity of 9mm) a shorter barrel (~3.5") and a poly frame. So you exchange power and accuracy for portability.
You don't really have to make any of these trade offs for a HD handgun, hence IMO that's plenty good enough reason for having two different pieces for carry and HD.
