What level of practice is neccessary to maintain and improve your shooting skills would you say ? What is the minimum ? At what point does the benefit start to be outweighed by other considerations such as time or money ?

Of course there are many kinds of practice that don't involve discharging the firearm, but how many rounds should a person actually shoot each week (on average) ? rifle, shotgun, handgun.

Given my situation and location, I try to average 200 rifle rounds (mostly.22), 50 shotgun (12g) and 50 handgun rounds (mostly .22) a week.

Depends on what you consider to be an adequate level of shooting proficiency. For some, they are happy to go to the range once a year and make sure they can hit a silhouette target at 7 yards.

On the other hand, a hardcore IPSC competitor might go through a case or two every month.

For me, personally, I try to practice Bullseye at least twice a week, which amounts to about 200 rounds of .22. I also try to hit the outdoor range at least once a week and shoot at least 100 rounds of 9mm. That will vary quite a bit, though, depending on how busy I am with work.

IPSC. 300 rounds or so per session, two or three times a week.

Plus matches.

Plus 10 to 20 minutes of dry-fire drills per day.

Because "good enough"...isn't...

The only free rifle ranges we have around here are far from local (a good 45 minutes away). There is a local shotgun range, however.

I try to go shooting at least twice a month, with plenty of dry-fire drills (i.e., "tacticool" room clearing :), shooting at the TV, aiming out my window, etc.) . I hope that's enough to do the job, since I simply can't afford to spend more time shooting. :(

As for rounds, I unload as many as I can when at the range (about ~300 rounds, mostly .22 and 7.62x39).

To improve you need to focus on quality and not just quantity. Dryfire and other gun handling drills help imensly. Going out with a practice plan and goals is also very helpful.

I also just love these threads. If you look at what everyone claims to shoot it is really funny. I think people take their busiest week and say it is what they always do. I am not implying anyone who posted before me does this. :p I know Alex shoots a lot since I saw him shoot last weekend at area 4. The funniest ones for me are the non-reloaders who claim to shoot like 500-1000 rounds per week of non-22LR ammo. IF you add it up they are shooting like 20K worth of ammo per year but they cant afford to reload.

As for me I am trying to shoot about 2-3 practice sessions per week with around 300 rounds per time, that plus dryfire and random matches. I am definately cutting back on the matches though. Some just hurt worse than help. plus for the same cost I can shoot another practice session.
