What is the difference between 50 rounds per week and 200 rounds per week?

Does answering 50 rounds per wee mean that we, on average, fire 50 rounds every week?

I voted the last option because it's hilarious and I believe that it takes more than rounds down range to remain proficient. I'm a big fan of dry fire exercise too.

Yes, so someone who averages 50 rounds a week would shoot roughly 2600 rounds a year :)

I agree but firing rounds definitely factors into the equation.

If I don't practice weekly, dry fire and live fire, my scores in bulls eye and combat league start going down. That's all the proof I need to keep up with my training. Well that and it's FUN!

I probably fire around 200 rounds a week on average and my skills are pretty consistent. No cartridge in particular, just whatever I'm in the mood for. I shoot a lot more than 200 rounds a week in the summer.

Maintain at what level? For me, top-flight form demands 30-40 rounds per session, 4-5 times per week. Mostly air pistol (I have a 10m range in the house), but 1-2 sessions per week outdoors when the weather is cooperating.

On scoped rifles.......probably 50 rounds a month would be more than adequate.

For a SD belly gun intended for shots of 3' or less, that would probably be all that is needed also.

For a handgun intended for ranges of 25 yards or more where precision is a priority, 200 rounds a month is probably a minimum.

Also, what precisely is the question? Are you asking how much we DO shoot? How much we could drop to and still maintain our current level of proficiency?

What it requires and what I can actually afford time and cost wise, are two different things. Think I mentioned once you marry and have responsibilities, things change.
As a single man making a very good living, I could go any time and shoot as much as I wanted to. Maybe that's why I married at 50. But now, it's different, if your partner doesn't want to support your habits it becomes harder.
As many a man will tell you women will let you believe whatever you choose to until they get that ring on. Then things change 'even if you don't see it". Slowly over a decade I shot less and less, seems like there was always something else that needed doing.
This week it was installing a washer Dryer and Dishwasher, see what I mean.

To maintain shooting skill, I say about 100 rounds per month.

To improve shooting skill, more frequent trips to the range, even if only shooting a small amount of ammo like 50 rounds or less.

I think he means going to 1 range session for 200 shots, or 4 sessions at 50 rounds each.

Also, I took the poll as asking what it takes to maintain your shooting skill, that's all. Wherever you're at, how many rounds at what interval to keep it at that.

Between 9mm, 40 S&W, 223 and 22LR, I'm averaging 200 rounds/week. That's 10,400 rounds/year.

I'm single and free, so I can stay pretty proficient. Living one mile from the National Forest helps a lot too.

OK. Still not sure how to answer the poll. I shoot 4 smallish indoor USPSA matches per month at 50-70 rounds each, then might go to the square range for another 100-200 rounds per trip maybe 1-2 times per month, then a little less than once a month a bigger match at 250-500 rounds... that level of shooting produces my current level of performance, so I guess whatever poll answer you think corresponds...

I would say somewhere between 200 and 300 a month would do it for me. That is of course when I do get to the range (provided all of the planets are perfectly aligned too).

I find that I usually shoot better after a long hiatus of not shooting.

(Probably because I've forgotten all of my bad habits......)

I chose 200 rounds per month, because that's what I normally shoot.

I always thought that was probably low, though, but its about as much as I can do in one range visit without starting to suffer diminishing returns, and with my other commitments and activities I seldom find time to go to the range more than once per month.

I think, like any other skill, it varies from person to person. I have to shoot about 100-150 rounds per week just to keep all my rounds on the 4" target at 15 yards. I also dry fire almost every day.

I have shooting buddies that shoot far less than that and never dry fire and are far better shooters than me.

IMO, nearly every skill is like this. Some people just need more practice than others.

A lot less if you're just interested in putting tight holes in paper. But if you're interested in maintaining proficiency in all areas of your skills from draw, to retention, to accuracy, to malfunction clearance, etc, you're looking at 200 rounds a month if you have a routine down. Far more if you're haphazard about it and don't conserve ammunition in the execution of drills.

1 shooting session per month for 200 shots, vs 4 sessions of 50 shots each?

What if I do one one month, and the other next month? lol

I voted 50 rounds a week. I'd like it if I shot every week, but I don't. I do average more than 50 per week over the long haul, at least at present.

I'm right at 500 rounds a week. Mostly from revolvers because I haven't started loading for 9/45 since picking it back up. It all depends on the person and how much they want to spend. I know if I don't put 100 rounds down a week, my comp scores suffer.

It depends on too many factors to name, but for me the biggest factor is the number of rounds through a platform overall. I've shot nearly 40k through 1911s over the last three decades, and the muscle memory is thoroughly ingrained in my DNA. OTOH, I have to shoot a box or two a month through the Shield I've had three years to maintain acceptable proficiency.
