How many rounds

I keep about 50 rounds for my carry guns, plus mags....

500 or so rounds of .22

Maybe 1 box of 20 each hunting rifle.

Then, any above and beyond that I shoot as often as I can.

I consider it extremely unlikely I would even need to reload in a self defense situation let alone need to have 100's of rounds available for self defense. Seems silly but maybe you live in a different environment then me.

Current stockpile:

.223 = ~1200 rounds
.45 ACP = ~1200 rounds
9mm = ~1500 rounds
7.62x39 = ~1500 rounds
.22 LR = ~1000 rounds
00 Buck = ~400 rounds

I would like to keep a little more on hand but frankly I don't have room in my safe (with the exception of .22s -- I could accomodate another 2k-3k). It's probably overkill, but I prefer to keep my ammo in a humidity-controlled environment which is why my safe is currently the limiting factor. I live in the Southeast so humidity tends to run high.

Good question and good replies. I'd say about 3 magazines at 99% for spring related issues. And about 50 rounds eqch per firearm. And for your shotgun (if you have one), I'd suggest a mix of each type (slug, buck, bird, etc....) should be good.

I only have one repeater and it’s my service revolver, so after all the suggestions I think I am going to keep about 250 rounds for my revolver, my break-open 12ga shot gun and my so to own break-open 30WCF.

:uhoh:

Full cylinder and two speedloaders. The rest is range food until I restock and/or find ANYTHING .38/.357

I keep at least a 1k rounds per gun of which at least 250 rounds is SD/HD. My gun collection is handguns, sporting rifles, hunting type shotguns and two short shotguns for HD. I see no need of a overpriced cloned semi auto assult weapon.

Well, I sell bullets for a living so I have about 200,000 of them of various calibers. I have about 2-5k brass for each of them. I have enough powder to load 2-20k depending on the caliber. But I only have 2000 large and small rifle primers. That makes my pistols worthless if I have to do some emergency reloading. Once primers get back to normal I intend to slowly build up a good supply of primers.

A real man's survival kit is one mag and a list of people in your neighborhood with survival kits. :evil:

I like rbernie's idea of 1 years worth of ammo/components, if for nothing other than to defeat supply fluctuations. To observe this in action, read the reloading forum; some folks list primer prices as "unavailable," some list them as "21.99/1k"... numbers will be higher or lower. The greater your stash, the better your chance to shop on good opportunity.

have in case of local emergencies or home defense
At any given time, I want to be able to pack a 3-day pack and take a long gun and handgun with me. Given that I would have to carry many other things, I will be limited in how much ammo I will be able to carry.

I will not realistically be fighting off hordes of heathens at home or away from home. I will most likely not be in protracted gun fights.

So to actually defend myself/home/family, I would take with me max 6-8 loaded rifle mags, 3-5 loaded pistol mags, and/or 25 rounds or so of shotgun ammo (combination of slugs and buckshot). MAXIMUM. [Glock 19 5x15 = 75 rounds of SD ammo; AR15 or Mini-14 8 magsx30 = 240 rounds 5.56 or equivalent weight in 7.62 stripper clips for the SKS; 10-15 buckshot rounds and 10-15 slug rounds]

Using the above as a starting point, I would want to have about double the above stored for emergencies, half of it in magazines ready to take with and the rest sealed. 500 rounds 5.56, half in mags, 150 rounds 9mm, half in mags, and/or 50+ rounds shotgun ammo (10 5-round boxes).

And then, of course, thousands and thousands of rounds on had for practice, sell, and barter, and rotating the stored ammo.

That's my plan.

As much as you can load/purchase or teach your kids to load and load fast! :evil:

I try to have at least 1000 rounds of each caliber but when you have 10 different calibers it's kinda tough but I'm getting there.

If you need a couple of thousand rounds you're out of luck anyway, cause more than likely they also have a tank. Or they got those black copters circling round.

Have you seen the folks at AR15.com ? I've seen more than a few guys there with over 100,000 rounds, some of their basements look like bunkers !!!

i stocked up on food...... and yes ammo, 3 to 400 rounds for my ar, and 1000 for my .22
100 to 150 ? for my shotgun.i also have [a lot] of reloading supplys,. MRE's..[two years]. and of course, ''man traps'' to keep people from killing and stealing my cows.
that i think will be the problem, people roaming the country looking for food, in the ''end times''
water, very important. so i have hand pump in my celler well,
and 2 thousand gallon tanks full.

i think people dont give the plain ol' shot gun enough credit....
and todays slug barrels, and optics are awsome....easy to swap barrels.bird shot....
ect.

.02 cents worth.

For home defense? A single box of 50 should suffice.

If you're worried about anything larger than what 50 rounds can handle, then I think one is either actively provoking forces they should not be, or thinking of SHTF scenarios. For the former, just stop it. For the latter, just get what you think you'll need.

How many rounds
How many rounds of ammunition (target rounds and home defense rounds) should I have in case of local emergencies or home defense? How many rounds for each rifle, handgun, and shotgun?

Google it/Search function.

Let's see, I'm 55 and I only needed to defend myself one time (I had no gun). Anyway, a box of ammo will last a long time unless you work at the 7/11 in the worst town in America. If you need more than that you were probably looking for trouble. Ask a cop how many rounds they have fired on duty, not many usually. Unless you are really unlucky you will never need to fire a gun for SD.
On the other hand, if you have the money and space, it's hard to have too much ammo for future shooting needs. It's all up to you but the NEED for lots of ammo is very very low.

Thanx, Russ
