needmorecowbell asked, "JK, what exactly is the concern? This is a gun forum. Probably safe to assume those on here have guns."
First, let me state that this is not an attempt to impugn the OP of this thread or the OP of the two threads I mentioned in my previous post. The questions and comments written below are NOT intended to imply that the OPs actually have any sort of malevolent intent or to defame their characters. I pose and discuss the questions below in an attempt to answer needmorecowbell's question above and explain my thought processes that led to my decision not to provide personal information in threads such as these.
Yes, this is a gun forum and one can safely make the assumption that most who frequent it are gun owners. My concern with this thread, however, is that are we being asked for specific, detailed information in the form of a poll (which asked for a reply as a range [e.g.,
”5 or less”]) and a question that the OP asked in the first post,
"How many semi-auto pistol do you own? Feel free to state the list of what you own...". For me, this (and the other two similar threads) got my OPSEC sense tingling and made me wonder:
Who is asking for this information?
Personally, I don't know, “el Godfather”, the OP of this thread, or “Norom” the OP of the other two threads that asked for detailed information. They may be--and probably are--straight-up, all-around good guys, but I have no way of knowing for sure. The fact that they both joined the board last month may mean nothing, but it makes me suspicious about why they are both asking these kinds of questions. Heck, they may even be the same person using two usernames for all I know.
Why are the asking for it?
It could be--and probably is--that the OPs of these threads are just as fascinated by the hobby as the rest of us and, being new to the board, want to know where they stand in relation to their peers. But maybe they are anti-gunners who are gathering data for Sarah B. I have no way of knowing.
What will be done with this information?
Who can say? If this is just a fun conversation about gun ownership amongst us enthusiasts, then it might be just be for our mutual enjoyment. But, if it is an attempt at gathering data, where will it be used? Polls make great copy for the media (e.g.,
“...a recent poll showed X% of gun owners owned Y number deadly semi-autos...”) and extreme examples make great news bites (e.g.,
...2 people responding to the poll owned arsenals of over ### each...”).
Who else might take this information and use if for their own purposes?
Even if the OPs of these threads are only asking innocent questions to satisfy their own curiosity, once the information is out there, there is no getting it back. Two years from now, someone else may come along and use the information as described above for their own purposes regardless of the OPs' original intents.
Do they need to know it?
In my mind, regardless of the OPs' intents, be they benign or malevolent, the answer to this question would always be “No”. Personally, I'm a very private person by nature, so I would not provide this kind of detailed information to anyone unless I know them extremely well (read this as family or long-time personal friends). It is one thing to say on a forum such as this that
”I own gun X and like or hate it“ or to maybe even post a note about that dream gun you picked up at this weekend's gun show, it is quite another thing to provide the details of your collection wholesale (e.g.,
“I own X number of guns of the following make and model...”)
What else might be at stake?
Again, who can say? Unless you take significant precautions, there is no real privacy on the internet (some might argue privacy cannot be attained even then). It may sound like a long shot (or down-right paranoia) but posting personal information on the internet such as a laundry list of expensive possessions may lead to you becoming a target for criminals. Heck, if you upload a photo of your possessions and neglect to delete the photo's metadata, depending on your camera and its settings, you could give a potential criminal the GPS coordinates of the where the photo was taken.
Call me paranoid, tell me to take off the tinfoil hat, tell me "lighten up, Francis!", but for me the bottom line is that I don't consider it worth the risk to provide this detailed information on line.
