Dear THR,
Among the .45 acp auto loaders listed, which would you prefer for self defense and possibly carry as well?
Thanks

I voted for the Beretta Px4 since you can get it in a caliber other than 45.

I voted for the Sig even though all of these have rails which are about worthless for a carry weapon...

For me the real choice is between 220Elite and the USP. I like the decock setup and capacity of USP, but grip angle and SRT in 220. Others listed are just considerations. Although I must state that Para is not bad at all either.

I'd drop the Para completely. These are not all in the same "class" of pistol, in my opinion. I mean, the Sig and the HK are top quality and $800+ pistols. The CZ and Glock are next, but completely different. Then comes the PX4, and the Para brings up the rear.

All I can say is that, for me, the Sig and the PX4 fit my hand the best. I also love the Glock. I'm not a huge HK fan (because I like Sigs so much better for the price), and the Para and CZ are too darn big for my hand. Given a large budget, I'd go:

1) Sig
2) Glock
3) PX4
4) HK
5) CZ
6) Para

I own both a G21 and a G30 - the G30 is my primary CCW. It's just as accurate as the G21, and more fun to shoot.

Para 14-45 is my everyday carry weapon, has been for more than 10 years. Never failed to fire anytime I have pulled the trigger.

Given what role it would be used in I would go with the one that fits me the best, which in this case would be the SIG P-220 Elite

I'm a huge Glock fan, but I find the full-sized (.45, 10mm) models to be too much of a handful - bordering on that ugly bulky look glock-haters talk about so much whereas I think the smaller framed (9mm 357sig etc) ones to be PERFECT.
So if I'm going .45 and a 1911 is out of the question, it'd definitely be HK

Not only are those all full size service pistols, the poll reads as a list of the largest of service pistols.

All are quality firearms and excellent home defence pistols, but all are poor choices for concealed carry.

I like your choices too, if you are choosing .45s, i actually carry USP compact 9mm, with Hydroshocks, my .45 too bulky to hide except in BIG fanny pack.

Glock not surprisingly in lead. I like G19, 20 and 18c, but 21 I dont fancy any more. I used to have 2 in past.

I voted USP, but if you can find the SIG P220 SAO that would be my choice. I can't stand DA/SA operation.

From that list G21. Wish I knew Glock 24 existed before I bought my first handgun I would have bought two and be done with buying handguns.

From your list -- I'd take the Sig 220 ...but I'd prefer it with a SAO trigger as well.

My personal choice for a carry gun is a Wilson Combat CQB 5" in .45 acp ....so I don't know why you didn't at least list one good 1911...???

Because most come with single stack low capacity magazine and if chamber is loaded slide lock lever has to be moved to down position before gun can be fired.

Capacity is no issue in my opinion..../ I can reload a 1911 easily with another mag off my belt in 1.5 sec or so ...( and I know I can do it, because I practice it every week - in any number of tactical drills).

....yes, a 1911 is intended to be carried ..."cocked and locked" .../ but that's no big deal either...

The manual of arms on a 1911 is very simple .../...and dropping the thumb safety is inherent in my DNA at this point.... but then I've been carrying and shooting well made 1911's for over 40 yrs / and what really makes a good 1911 spectacular, is the trigger....no gun with a hinged trigger (that has to move thru an arc ) ...will ever break as clean -- or reset as clean ..as a well made, and well tuned 1911...in my opinion.

but to each his own...
