Dear THR:
I would like to hear from those of you who have used the same semi auto for EDC for at least past 5 years.

A. Which semi auto?

B. Why this particular one?
-1. Is it because of caliber?
-2. Is it because of platform?
-3. Is it because the make?

C. Why you chose to use the same semi auto instead if rotating among a few? I would specially be interested in hearing about any tactical reason if you may have for this.

D. Has it ever malfunctioned?

E. Do you use the same magazines or you rotate them?

Thank you.

A. M&P40. One with no thumb lever manual firing inhibitor, and no magazine disconnect.

B. It has very little to do with brand. I wanted a pistol with a medium resistance trigger that does not require anything other than trigger pull motion to fire. It also had to meet a bunch of other requirements, such as minimum capacity and ergonomics. There are very few pistols that meet all of them. M&P40 happenes to meet them better than any other.

C. Because of the above mentioned reason, I have best fighting capability with M&P40 as far as pistols are concerned. There is no logical reason why I would rotate it with pistols that offer less. I do carry other pistols, but it is not a "rotation." They are for when I cannot conceal an M&P40.

D. Yes. Then again, there isn't any pistol that did not malfunction among ones I've fired a significant amount of ammo with.

E. It is rotated. But, I do not rotate around all of them.

Never mind, I forgot that you were asking people who carried the same pistol for at least 5 years. I carried a few different types of pistols, but some of them were not my choice.

I have three primary carry guns, but have carried others. Two because they are small and easy (Seecamp .32 ACP & NAA .22 Mag.) and a .45 ACP because it's 100% dependable, I like the caliber, and I shoot it very well. One of the others is a 696, and again, I like the caliber and I shoot it well.

Until very recently I have been carrying the same one for a little over 6 years.

A. Kel-Tec PF9

B. Caliber & Form Factor

C. During that time I have sometimes carried a different piece on a one-off basis, but the PF9 has been my primary.

D. Recently while testing some reloads the Ejector broke. That is the only malfunction that I have experienced with it.

E. No conscious rotating program on my part, but I imagine that I do inadvertently shift them around a bit after every range session.

A. Which semi auto? Glock 26.

B. Why this particular one?
I had a Glock of one kind or another for 15 years. When I decided to carry the G17 was too big for Phoenix in the summer. I stuck with the platform I was very familiar with but was smaller. I have stuck with it all this time because to this day I think it is still the best carry gun ever made.

C. Why you chose to use the same semi auto instead if rotating among a few? I would specially be interested in hearing about any tactical reason if you may have for this.
I don't understand a carry rotation, I mean the very concept of it is the opposite of what I am. I can't understand why anyone would carry anything but the best pistol he could be carrying. Your EDC is a working gun not a fashion choice. Honestly, whenever I hear someone say something like "their carry rotation" I take them and what they say less seriously.

D. Has it ever malfunctioned? Sure, I've had a few rounds that failed to go off, they all had pretty good hits on them though and I think it was the ammo not the gun. Other than that no. I did replace the RSA at 5,000 rounds.

C. Do you use the same magazines or you rotate them? Pretty much the same ones but I'm not fanatical about it. More laziness than anything else.

Sig P239 DAK in 357 SIG.

Light and small enough to carry the vast majority of the time.
I have to carry a Glock at work, so, no safety, decocker or other on off switches on my off duty.
I originally bought it in .40 so I can shoot department ammo, then switch back to 357 SIG for qual and carry.
Big enough to handle like a full sized gun.
The 357 is a very reliable feeding round with good street creds.
I carry appendix, I won't carry a cocked pistol pointed at my femoral artery. The P239 DAK is true DAO.

I carry a Glock 22 daily as an assigned duty weapon. , I carried a Gen 3 about 12 years and am about 3 years into a Gen 4. Any malfunctions have been far and few between I do not rotate mags.

A. I have EDC'd a Glock 26 for 6 years. (2005-2009 and 2011-Present) (I gave a G19 a trial run for the two years in between, but it's option 2 now)

B. This particular one because:
-1. Yes, it is because of the cartridge
-2. Yes, it is because of the platform
-3. Yes, it is because of the manufacturer

C. Why would I rotate? For me, the G26 is perfect. Why would I NOT want consistency? I want the same grip angle, the same trigger pull, the same grip eel, the same bore axis, etc, every time. I have other Glocks I carry sometimes, but 13/14 days, it's a G26. And the days it's not the G26, it's almost always a different Glock. I did buy a second G26 this year, though.

D. Yes. I don't worry much about them. My carry magazines don't get used and abused at the range. I use them enough to verify function, an then re-use them as I rotate carry ammo here and there. Magazines don't wear out from sitting around loaded, but from use, and they still have plenty of spring pressure and still work perfectly. I did eventually rotate out the ones I'd been using for years, though, just 'cause

I basically have 2 carry guns. My EDC is a S&W4006. The Taurus 709 sees time when the other is not practical. {which isn't often}
The 4006 gets temperamental with lead ammo but works perfect with factory SD ammo. The Taurus eats everything and anything.

I never saw any reason to ''rotate'' my carry guns. I consider these two tools, the rest are just range toys and game guns.

a-Sig p220 compact sao, 45 acp
B- yes. All of them
C- once in a while i switch out. Either a 1911 or s&w3913. Depending what im doing. If im going to spend some time away from home in the hot summer, i carry it in a 5.11 vest under a buttem up shirt. In heavy winter ice fishing, i carry the 1911 for the extra grip for gloves.
D- never has malfunctioned, not once. With reloads and factory rounds.
C-(e?) same mag, just replace the mag spring yearly.

Well, for over 20 years I carried the same gun, a Browning Hi-Power. I don't carry it now for a variety of reasons. When I did it was because I wanted a 9mm for the economy of ammo and high mag capacity (13 rounds, a lot at the time). I also simply loved the make. The BHP has a very good trigger (once a little work is done) and the gun points and shoots very well.

At the time (and even today, I suppose) it's on the short list of Single Action Only 9mms. You can get a 1911 in 9mm from a number of makers but aside from the HK P7 and the old Star BM I can't think of any other ones off the top of my head. I'm a C1 kind of guy, so the BHP was an obvious choice.

Again, at the time I carried that one gun 98% of the time. One of the great virtues of the BHP is the thinness through the slide- it's extremely easy to carry and easy to conceal. It's one of the easiest full sized guns to CCW IMO.

Most of the time I carried with one of three mags that I knew worked. All of the mags I have are reliable but I have some marked for carry.

In 20+ years I could count all the issues on one had with a couple fingers left over. It digested thousands of rounds, probably tens of thousands, with almost zero problems. But earlier this year I had a case rupture and it seems to have dinged the extractor, and it doesn't run right at the moment. Gotta get it the gun doctor to be looked at.

By this time though it had already been supplanted as my main CCW for a few reasons. First, I got a Beretta Nano. While it's not as good a gun for fighting it's a bit easier to CCW. Ease of carry and light weight are points in favor of the Nano. Second, I developed a love of Garrett Industries holsters, and they don't make one for the BHP. Aside from my Miami Classic I don't have a holster I like for it anymore. I no longer care for shoulder rigs, in part because of changes in attire and the fact that I'm not as flexible as I was 20 years ago.

I suppose one of the main reasons I don't carry it now is that I'm happy with my HK USPf9s and HK P30S when I want a full sized gun. They aren't quite as thin as the BHP but they hold more rounds and shoot just as well. And I can find holsters that fit them from Garrett, too.

A. Kel Tec PF9

B. Mostly because it's the smallest, lightest 9mm I could find when I bought it in 08. My previous EDC was a 4" XD9 so it was a significant upgrade in comfort.

C. Why you chose to use the same semi auto instead if rotating among a few? In my opinion the most likely self defense situation will be 10-15 meters or closer with only a few rounds fired so the accuracy, magazine and power is fine for that range and an acceptable trade for the size and weight.

D. Has it ever malfunctioned? Yes, but only with handloads, so I blame the ammo. It works flawlessly with proper loads.

E. Do you use the same magazines or you rotate them? I use the same one but check it ever few months at the range.

G17. I have more faith in this weapon than any other firearm that I have ever owned. It has never failed to go bang in any way unless it was intentional on my part. I 'rest' my mags every 3 months. I have 2 other pistols, but for me, this one is it.

A. Which semi auto?
HK P2000sk
B. Why this particular one?
-1. Is it because of caliber?
-2. Is it because of platform?
-3. Is it because the make?
Because it is a great gun that I shoot well. Caliber is secondary to my proficiency. Mainly I desire a gun that is reliable and that I can use well. The P2000sk has almost every feature I want in a CCW.

C. Why you chose to use the same semi auto instead if rotating among a few? I would specially be interested in hearing about any tactical reason if you may have for this.
I can think of no reason to ever change or "rotate" with other guns.

D. Has it ever malfunctioned?
No.

E. Do you use the same magazines or you rotate them?
I rotate through mags. One is in the gun until I go to the range, then I swap to a different mag after cleaning it and reloading. They are marked. This insures fresh ammo.

Thank you.
You're welcome

I also carry a Seecamp for all of the same reasons,

carry rotation for me is how im dressed..

there are times my p95 will just not work..

on bike, in truck, in pulpit ..

all depends on the clothes.. otherwise i would not "rotate" lol

I have carried the Glock 19 3rd Gen for many years in a crossbreed holster copy during summer and winter. Of all the handguns I own, I shoot the G19 best. I believe more in shootability than the caliber size. I also like the same consistency on every trigger pull.

I CC a 1935 Beretta, 7.65 browning (.32acp) It's 70 years old and reliable as the day it was made. It's VERY concealable but has a good heft to it. I only use Fiocchi fmj. It's a hotter load with better penetration.

Whenever I go heavier, my Glock 19, 2nd gen is 2nd to none.

A. Kimber Custom II with Hogue wrap-around grips, Meprolight night sights, and G.I. style plug and rod. However, lately I have been using my Para SF-45A a lot more.

B.
1. I do like the .45, but it's not decisive. I would have no problem carrying a 9mm with modern bullets.
2. Mostly, yes. You get spoiled to the trigger and reset.
3. There are a lot of Kimber haters, but mine is fantastic. If I had to replace it tomorrow, I would give the STI Spartan a look, and I wish Ruger made theirs in something besides stainless.

C. If something works, why should I feel compelled to change it?

D. Maybe a few times when I first got it, about ten years ago. Not that I can remember.

E. I mostly use the same 3 Wilson 47D magazines.

I do use my Para SF-45A more frequently. That's my idea of changing from summer to winter -carrying a BIGGER 1911. :)

A. Which semi auto?
- Taurus 709 slim

B. Why this particular one?
-1. Is it because of caliber? I only have 9mm semi autos.
-2. Is it because of platform? Its easy to carry.
-3. Is it because the make? No.

C. Why you chose to use the same semi auto instead if rotating among a few? I would specially be interested in hearing about any tactical reason if you may have for this.
- I occasionally, depending on the weather, carry a larger S&W 469.

D. Has it ever malfunctioned?
- No, neither of them have. I've seen someone limp wrist my S&W. A combination of that and some old hand loads caused the gun to fail to return to battery. Using the same loads, I had no issues, so I leaned towards the limp wristing as the problem. My Taurus has had no issues.

E. Do you use the same magazines or you rotate them?
I use the same magazines.

I carried nothing but a BHP in .40 for over 10 years. Great gun, wonderful build quality, caliber started with a 4, and fit my hand well. I have 3 of them so they did get rotated but one was mostly just for when wearing fancy dress up clothes.

But my wife couldn't shoot them due to her arthritis so these days the carry guns and bedside gun are Springfield XDm's in 9mm. I don't rotate these, the bedside gun has a laser mounted, my carry gun has TFO night sights, and the third one is the 5.25" match model I use for 3 gun. I still use my BHP in .40 for fancy dress.

LCP is my EDC, 24/7.
My stature makes IWB carry great when standing, but uncomfortable with heavy printing when sitting, and I work a desk job. So I needed a gun that would work well in a pocket holster across a range of pants and seasons. My G26 proved too wide for that, so I replaced it with the LCP.
Do I feel under armed with a 380? No. Do I wish it were a 9? Yeah.
No malfunctions of any kind. I clean it after every trip to the range, which is not very often, and a rotate mags once a month.
If money were no option, I would probably have a j frame in the rotation with it. And a larger gun for those rare days when an IWB holster would work. A Dan Wesson CBOB if we're talking ideal situation.
Long story short, I carry my LCP every day with no regrets. Maybe I wish it were a Boberg but not enough to fret over it.

Which semi auto?

S&W 6906

Why this particular one?

Concealability, platform (DA/SA no manual safety), quality of manufacture and American made

Why you chose to use the same semi auto instead if rotating among a few? I would specially be interested in hearing about any tactical reason if you may have for this.

I choose the same model because I don’t want to have to think about which gun is in my hand under duress. Recently I have started rotating between the 6906 and a 4006 but they are exactly the same platform.

Has it ever malfunctioned?

No

Do you use the same magazines or you rotate them?

I have training/range magazines and carry magazines I don’t rotate carry magazines

A. Which semi auto?
Ruger SR9c

B. Why this particular one?
-1. Is it because of caliber?
That's one reason
-2. Is it because of platform?
Ergos are perfect for me
-3. Is it because the make?
I am completely confident in Ruger products

C. Why you chose to use the same semi auto instead if rotating among a few? I would specially be interested in hearing about any tactical reason if you may have for this.
Familiarity... and plan to keep it that way. I did my homework, I'm still satisfied with the choice, and I shoot it well.

D. Has it ever malfunctioned?
User or ammo induced only.

E. Do you use the same magazines or you rotate them?
Same

A. Ruger LCP

B. platform(pocket carry) caliber .380acp acceptable CC caliber

C. I prefer to limit my platforms for the sake of familiarity, rotation with another LCP is something I plan to do.

D. once with Blazer aluminum

E. Rotate between mag in gun and extra carry mag.

4 years carry, 3-1/2 with LCP

A. Which semi auto? Kahr PM9

B. Why this particular one?
-1. Is it because of caliber?--yes
-2. Is it because of platform?--yes
-3. Is it because the make?--yes

For 10+ years it rides very nicely in front right pocket in a inexpensive DeSantis pocket holster. If I feel inclined I carry a LW 1911 .45 ACP Compact or 1911 Dan Wesson 10mm CBOB on my hip if in the woods. Occasionally I'll hip carry a S&W 9c with a laser in the city. Every once and awhile I'll carry a LW J frame with 135 gr. Gold Dots.

But the Kahr gets 85% of my CCW it's more or less my EDC.

D. Has it ever malfunctioned? Only a couple of times when new, now well over 5000+ rounds now and it's very accurate and trouble free.

E. Do you use the same magazines or you rotate them? Same, but carry a 7 round spare and rotate ammo.

I have Crimson Trace Laser and factory night sights on it and the load is a 124 gr. XTP at about 1025 fps. Night sights are still strong after 10 years.
