I buy a crate at a time, when I get less than 200 rnds left, I order another. Not too worried about the stuff ever running out. After mankind destroys itself and the world, there will still be cockroaches and 7.62x54r ammo found in every corner of the world.

880 rnds polish and 440 rnds hungarian. All 147 grn steel core. Also some barnaul type 200? grn soft points that kick like hell. Enough functional stripper clips for 100 rounds.

From 30 yards, the M39 and No4Mk1 look almost identical. The protruding mag is no different than the M91 Mauser, Enfields, M95 Mannlicher, M91 Carcano, or 88 Commission rifle. Ian Hogg bashes the Mosin for the mag, yet he calls the mag on the 88 rifle "graceful".

Ash, Maybe you can't tell the difference from 30yds, but I can.:D I don't know Ian Hogg...

i only have about 40 rounds wrapped in paper bundles i want to start handloading 7.62x54 sometime soon though because my m39 does damn well with random surplus id like to see what it can do with some quality stuff

I reload since it is near impossible to find cheap surplus 7.62x54R ammo in Mass, and Mass residents can not buy ammo from out of state, either in person or online if one is intending to bring it back into the state.

I wonder how many rounds the average Ivan carried on him in the field. What we blow in a couple afternoons was probably the supply for a whole platoon or more.

Of course, Pvt. Ivan probably didn't spend as much time inspecting his bore after cleaning it, looking for the shine.

Thirty in the twin belt pouch, maybe twice that in the sack on the back if you were resourceful.

I own a number of both Enfields and M39's, including a #4 (and #4 Mk2). Their aesthetic is very similar. Though I find it difficult to call a military rifle ugly, I find that folks generally make their mind up which rifle they prefer, and then look at the others out there and decide what features they do not like (rather than the other way around). Because the Mosin is generally equally as accurate and durable, more durable than many, the critical opinion must focus on the safety or aesthetics.

Ian Hogg has written many, many books on military small arms. He is a British author who has an understandable preference for all things British and certainly does not care all that much for the Mosin.

Me, I like Finnish Mosins because of their historical value and their accuracy. I prefer shooting my Garand most, as it is my most accuract long arm. That said, I have between 1,000 and 5,000 rounds of 7.62x54R, older Russian fare on chargers, some 400 rounds of Bulgarian from the 1980's, a smattering of Chinese, Hungarian, and Czech (and a small amount of East German target stuff) plus a bunch of Albanian.

So many choices at Sportsman's Guide...

So what is the deal with the different varieties?

http://www.sportsmansguide.com/browse/browse.asp?c=96&s=954

The polish light ball is cheapest, there is Czech steel, Albanian brass, some Silver over yellow tip. Is there any reason to pay more for less, or is it all pretty much the same. I'm happy with my Polish so far, a couple lightly split cases, but overall seems in good shape.

I checked out the long version here:
http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinAmmo.htm

but I was curious for people's experience here...

There are differences in accuracy, consistency, how much filth it leaves in your bore, the construction of the bullets and the type of casing.

The cheap surplus will probably run out eventually, but since the Russians still use 7.62x54R in their machine guns and some of their rifles, I'm guessing we'll have Wolf stuff for a long, long time.

Just picked up another crate of Czech silvertip. A local Gander Mt is selling them for $86, not too bad of a deal when you consider shipping costs.

I typically keep <1000 rounds on hand, but at this moment I have somewhere around 1200. I imagine it will be some time before it 'runs out'.

Just in terms of milsurp.... probably around 3k-3.5k. In terms of brass, primers, bullets, powder, etc... I could load LOTS.

I think at the moment I have about 8000 rounds of albanian, 1200 rounds of czech sivertips, 800 rounds of Hungarian yellow tip heavy ball and just ordered 2200 rounds of Czech hollow core training ammo. I think I have enough for a while.
