I keep hearing about people buying up thousands of rounds of ammunition. How much ammo do most of you guys keep on hand?

I guess that is one of those questions that probably isn't polite to ask most gun owners. In general, I believe that you can never have too much ammo, except in a fire.

Not alot... maybe a average of a 2000 rounds. a large % of that are 22s. I tend to buy 2 bricks at a time.

Frankly, many gun owners live in a state of constant paranoia of their own government, or of the UN boys in blue helmets, maybe the Chinese Army.
There are large US govt. computer departments, whose analysts who keep track of any comments made on gun websites about buying lots of ammo, and keep top-secret X-files on anybody with more than 200 rounds.

I don't have much either: only about 8,800 rds., not including .22:
1,100 .303, 1,900 x54R, 2,300 .223, 4,800 x39. Mini 30, SKS, MN 44 and a LE (hopefully) being shipped. This stuff was bought to avoid much higher costs in the future based on fuel/mineral prices last spring/summer.

Wish I had 15,000 rounds at '08 prices, as I'm not involved in illegal activities and this stuff is 100% legal.
The more popular calibers were all bought months before the election.

That's like asking a cattle rancher how many head of cattle he's got. Joking, I keep enough so I can shoot a bit and still have some left over for another day.

200-250 each cal...
Add 50-100 per gun in that cal.
350-400 for you Go to battle rifle...

That will get me by if SHTF... after 300 9mm, 250 45acp, and 400 .223... I Doubt I will still be around...

If I want to practis, I will buy more... and shoot the old stuff 1st...

Ammo Inventory

Always remember, a rifle without ammunition is just a fancy club, unless it has a bayonet. Then it elevates to a fancy spear. Having "too much ammo" is like "having too much fun." Can you?

And by the way, I keep enough that if my house were to burn, everyone would probably think it was a Chinese fireworks factory going up. A nation of unarmed citizens is like a baby seal swimming among a school of sharks.

Enough to satisfy both my range time, and knowing that I can defend my home if needed.

I keep 3 loaded magazines or speed loaders for my defensive pistols. The rest of my pistol ammo I buy as I shoot it.

I reload for my rifles so there is always plenty of ammo around.

Wow....I didn't mean to offend anyone. The same question has been discussed in the shotgun section and no one got offended.

I asked because I was ammo shopping the other day and noticing the disgustingly high prices. Either every shooter in the country has recently bought a case of ammo, or a few people have bought thousands of rounds at a time and literally have rooms and rooms in their basements full of it.

I don't know anything about rifles. I currently only have shotgun and handgun ammunition. I know how much space 100 rounds of shotshells takes up in a closet, I have no idea how much space a similar store of rifle ammunition takes up...I was just curious how much ammunition you rifle guys think is prudent to keep on hand.

My personal theory is that ammunition costs will continue to rise, with rifle costs dropping off because... what good is a rifle you can't shoot? I bought a few hundred rounds of ammo, enough to break in a new gun, and will be buying my first rifle (in about 6 years) this week, provided I can find a good deal.

If this was a financial forum I don't think it would be out of line to ask how much money is wise to keep on hand, to burn up in the short turn, and to last you through hard times. No offense was intended.
