How much damage was done to my gun

Agree with others. Probably not damaged, but have a competent smith inspect it.

That ain't safe. Best drop 'em in yer .338.

Nah, it'll be fine. I heard on "The High Road" that if you interchange .308 and .30-.06 you probably won't know the difference unless you're a gunsmith.

Speaking of brother in laws:

My brother in law borrowed the M1 carbine for a hunting trip once, the darn little carbine was nice and mint since my dad always pampered his guns. Well, when he brought it back the left side of the stock had a gash about 8 inches long and about 1/4 inch deep, apparently he was in a tree and fell asleep crashed 10 feet to the floor on his butt and dropped the gun which skid across a broken limb. Needless to say that was the first AND last gun he ever borrowed :cuss::banghead::cuss:

No, you didn't. What you read was the gun chambered in .30-06 probably wasn't severely damaged by firing a few .308 rounds. No one said anything about going the other way around. No one said they were interchangable. The suggestion of a gunsmith was because the original poster obviously doesn't see any noticeable damage.

wrong cartridge

I have had that experiance.try 303 savage in 303 1913 enfield.did not hurt it.
and the answer to his question was 308 were used in 30/06 chamber with adapter.head space caused no fire because extracter did not hold shell against bolt face.you would be suprized what has been fired in wrong chamber
and worked.actualy it would be like 38 sp in 357.the cal is the same.there are other chambering that can be done tho I dont recomend it.

the absolute worse thing that ever happened to me was when my girlfriend was having trouble with my 8mm m48 mauser. i should have been supervising her more because she hadn't shot since she left russian commie high school.

well, i finally noticed her struggling. i went over, looked at the rifle, and found to my dismay a 7.62x54R mosin nagant round jammed waaaay up that 8mm puppy.

i couldn't shake, extract, or poke it out with a cleaning rod.

so, i removed the bolt, found a nice patch of hard dirt, and slammed the butt of that rifle down as hard as I could.

pop*

mbdolfin, where are you in South Jersey?, my folks live in Burlington County and I go over once a month or so to visit. I have a set of .30-06 headspace gauges.

If time and travel permits I would gladly take a look at it for you.

I am sorry at least I know realize that I am not alone in having a duf for a brother in law. Last time we were all home for a holiday my father in law, brother in law (wifes brother) and I were going shooting, we invited mt sisters in law's husband and we said yes then went and hid so he would not have to go with us, He does not believe in guns

This is a very good reason for owning an M44 Nagant.

Loan that to the local village idiot with a handful of rounds of 180-grain HEAVY BALL. Just clip the tip of the bullet off with some lineman's pliers if your local regs prohibit hunting with FMJ.

Mmmmmmm.... gooooooooood recoil.

Your gun is not hurt, clean it and don't lend it out again.

Yep, I am a gunsmith. The 308 with the extra space in a 30-06 will not damage the gun. The pressure will be way less than the 30-06 cartridge itself.. Send me th blown out cases if you do not want them.
