Fired a friends Olympic Arms AR-15 clone for the first time a couple of weeks ago and both I and my wife fell in love with it. Now we're drooling for a AR-15 carbine, maybe an Olympic Arms (as we're in Olympia, WA with them) but we'll have to wait a couple months to buy... unless we sell or trade our Norinco SKS to put money towards it. I love my SKS, but it's a bit bulky for close quarters (and my wife is very little) so we figured an AR could fill the space between our CC pistols and long rifles.

Question is, I'm not sure what the going rate is.

I don't have it in front of me at the moment, so forgive me if I have to correct this when I look it over and add some pics later.

It's a Norinco SKS with all matching #'s and a black composite stock. It's been fired quite a bit, but it's overall clean and in good shape, no visible damage that I've noticed. I have a 20rd steel clip and a 30rd composite, an extra receiver cover with scope rails (I have a little 4-9x scope on there that works really well for it, but I plan to keep it for the AR), a removable flash suppressor, an extra trigger group, and the cruciform bayonet (the rifle does not have the lower mount for the lug, however). I'll also throw in a bunch of stripper clips that seem to keep collecting in my ammo box, not that they're worth anything.

I know these are getting harder to find and many people love them, I'd like to get the best deal I can without ripping someone off. Anybody have some good ideas of a starting price to look for?

Thanks,
Josh the newbie.

welcome to thr. this is probally not what you want to hear but i would say keep the sks. you are gona get very little for it, and the money that you could get for it you could save up in little time. plus you will probally regreat selling the sks. i know i regret selling any guns that i did in the past. i have now made a pledge that i will not sell another gun again.

$200 or so is the going rate. BUT I don't think I would sell either. Is the $200 going to really help you that much?

Yeah, what everyone else said. I once sold a Heritage Rough Rider 22 SA for $90 that I paid $150 for. I have regretted it ever since :banghead:.

The SKS makes a fun plinker, especially since the ammo is so cheap. It would be a shame to sell such a high value per dollar rifle when you could just save a little longer.

I buy, sell and trade regularly, the SKS has been a wild ride the past few years, from $250 for your Nork, in 2001, to about $125 at it's low in 2005. It's now around $200 and on the rise as the Yugo's have started to dry up this past year. At one time I couldn't sell a russian for $200, just too many Yugo's at a dealer cost of $69 ea. by the dozen. As the post above states, it's a high value per $ cost rifle. It's chambered in a popular round, can knock a deer off it's feet, is semi-automatic, and is accurate as any military rifle. I think with a little time you can get $225 with the extra equipment. Best of luck with whatever you decide.

I'm with them. Keep the SKS. Save another month or two for the AR. You'll feel better about it in the long run.

I would keep the Norc. I paid $135 for one recently. If it takes a couple weeks extra to come up with the money I would.

Well, I paid $100 for it so $200+ isn't a bad thing. And ammo used to be cheap for it, but since the fun overseas, all the surplus ammo's dried up for the AK's.

And saving up for the AR's not a big deal, especially since the wife wants it too :) but a couple hundred makes it that much easier, and I don't see us taking it out much when we've got a tricked out AR too. I'd rather know someone else is enjoying it than knowing it's rusting away in it's case.

Thanks for the warm greeting and the advice. I'll be taking it out this weekend to decide either way.

Keep it I say too , but if you decide to sell it in a couple of weeks ( just spent my gun fun cash on a new optic for my OlyArm K3B-M4 )drop me a pm here I'll be happy to take it off your hands I'm about 10 miles north of Oly) . In the mean time drop by JSgunparts (owned and run by Oly employees on the side )or Larry's Guns (a Oly stocking dealer ) in Oly . The new Cabelas is selling Yugo SKSs for $229 so I fugure a Norinco will go for about the same .
