How often do you buy a new gun?

Depends in how quickly I can pay off buds layaway on a 30 a week gun budget!

I have a second account set up with part of my pay direct deposited into it weekly (thirty bucks) to find new gun purchases so my wife doesn't miss it.

M&P with 150 left to go is the current one!
*swyped from the evo so excuse any typos*

I like to buy used so I can sell them or trade them for something else as my tastes changes. Sure I could keep them, but I don't like stockpiling a whole bunch of guns. I have no issues trading off something I no longer enjoy shooting for something I would enjoy shooting.

I usually make at least 2 purchases a year, mostly handguns.

I've been trying to get one a month for the last year. I've done pretty good as far as that goes. :) Granted some months it's a 80-100 .22 marlin 60 or savage 64 but yeah.

I don't buy a new gun (or a used one) very often these days.
Part of that is because there are fewer and fewer guns I really need. I'm kind of getting the bases covered to the point where after about three more I won't actually need any more. It's not that I have a large collection by anyone's definition, but I've owned A LOT of guns in the past ten or so years. I've tried enough of them out and I've got a really good idea of what I can do with what I have and what I need the next purchase to be able to do.
So unless my purchase will fill one of the holes in my collection - meaning one of my needs - I look at the cool guns I see on the used rack, then put them back and walk away.

The things I am most likely to buy in a gun store these days are:
1. .22LR ammo - I like Federal American Eagle 40 grain LRN's. This is by far my most frequent purchase.
2. Reloading components.
3. Factory loaded ammo. I don't buy much of this anymore since I reload, but I still do keep some factory loads around for defense and general purpose needs.
4. magazines, speedloaders, assorted accessories.
5. a gun. I won't buy expensive ones because they take money away from my planned purchases, and I won't buy cheap ones because they're a waste of money and I just don't need them.

Truth be told, the next two purchases will likely be what you might call custom. There's virtually no chance of me just buying one in a store because due to the nature of what they are and what I want them for, I almost have to have them built the way I want them. For instance, you just don't walk into most gun stores and walk out with a historically accurate and fully functional reproduction of a French and Indian War era musket. There's no getting around that fact. Due to price, I can't buy a gun like that very often. And due to the fact that it will have to be built largely by hand by a true craftsman, even if I could afford one every week, it just takes too long to build them. You probably couldn't buy one every week even if you could afford to!
Now some day, when the skys part and money begins to rain down on me, I'm going to spend a lot of it on semi-auto military style rifles, old timey six-guns and lever-actions, and about six flintlocks. But those are wants and they can wait.

I find that it has slowed down considerably as I have discovered that there's really only so many ways to make a chunk of lead fly downrange.

I messed around with semi-autos until I found what I like (Sigs & XDs) and now I pretty much don't need any more of them. Sure I'd like a P228 or P229; but I don't need to spend the money to get one.

I messed around with revolvers long enough to decide that I like old Colt and S&Ws and bought a few of each- but how many 5-screw Smiths does one man really need? As sacreligious as it might be to say, I'm not that anal that I need to have one of each change number and barrel length. Representative specimens are just fine with me.

Battle rifles- I tried a few, didn't like ARs, AKs are so-so, and I settled on FALs. I'm not interested in collecting the variants of the FAL so there that goes.

I messed with uncommon calibers for a little bit and discovered that 32 S&W in all its various sizes is fun. I tried big bores and discovered that 44 Magnum, 45 Colt and 454 Casull are fun, but not all that different. I tried single actions and well, they are OK. I got into gallery loads and once they worked there's nothing more to see here.

I got into shotguns, and while different, they all go bang.

Rifles, well, once I settled on an accurate platform it was all over. Milsurp Mausers, well, other than caliber, what's the point of having fifteen different variations to show that each one has a slightly different crest or ordinance mark on them? I mean, I know guys with crates full of Mosin-Nagants, and they can show that every one of them has some slight collectible variance that makes each one unique, but they are all Mosin-Nagants to me.

CCW pistols- I've got what I like, and that's good enough.

22's- well, I've got an assortment, and starting to get the kids into them, but still, it's a 22, whats changed there?

So really, I don't like new for newness' sake, so unless something comes along that really blows my skirt up, it's not that interesting anymore. Gunshows by and large totally suck, full of overpriced junk or overpriced high end stuff I don't want. Deals are not like they used to be. I'm not interested in getting into Title II stuff yet. What's left?

I'm thinking about a 45-70 lever gun, but really I can't hunt with it in Ohio, it would just be for fun.

I buy very few guns, but lots of ammo/components.

I find that most of my guns collect dust in the cabinet and I really only concentrate one one or two at a time. Putting more in the safe really doesn't interest me. Filling some "niche" is fine, but it seems almost all of my needs are very adequately covered.

The one need that isn't "covered" is developing my skills to the highest level so that's where I spend my money.

I'd guesstimate that means my round count to gun-buying ratio is something above 10,000:1.

The perfect storm for buying a gun usually hits around the 4th of July. We have a gun show in town and I am on vacation with extra cash. Other than that it varies. I usually pick up on average about 2 guns a year.
