Had an instructor tell me that he was called to the scene of a gangsta style drive by. Turns out, the guy who was doing the shooting was sitting in the window opening and shooting across the roof at his target. Apparently, the sideways gun handling and motion of the vehicle actually helped him shoot through the roof of the vehicle, seriously injuring his dawg's in the car. Thankfully, no rounds ever left the vehicle.
Once upon a time I saw a guy shooting the first stage of a USPSA match gangsta style. He said after the stage that he had never fired a handgun before in his life. He came in dead last on the first stage, hitting no targets at all. Basically all he did was turn money into noise . One of our Master Class shooters, who is also a Texas CHL Instructor and retired DPS Highway Patrol Sergeant, took him to the safe area and showed him a few tips. On the second stage he came in 5th out of 25 shooters.
In other words, the gangsta technique is about worthless.
An instructor taught me to slightly cant my handgun when shooting one handed. It brings the sights in view easier w/o adjusting my arm or my head or eyes. Also, follow up shots are a little easier because for some reason the firearm falls back in light quicker. I have tried the gangsta grip but it didn't add any benefit other than feeling silly
I tried this once with a 9mm semiautomatic, but found that my accuracy and point of impact were not close to when I used traditional sighting technique; when I practice weak hand shooting (left hand) with my 642's I have to cant the gun @ 45 degrees to properly line up the gun with my dominant eye (right eye) and it isn't as comfortable since my hand is slightly twisted and torqued...I have to alter my point of aim to compensate for the point of impact
Denzel made me want to. Nobody else. Now I want dual 4506's. But I'll shoot them properly Training Day did have some ridiculous aiming in parts, didn't it? check out Jake Hoyt's (ethan Hawke) improper use of the Mossberg 500 pgo for reference.
I have never seen the point in shooting "gangsta style". I have found the McMillen cant (tilting the gun between 15 & 45 degrees) helpful when shooting one handed.
I'm too embarrassed to go gangsta. If I ever get the range totally to myself, however, I may give it a try just to be able to schmooze my students in the disciplinary school where I work. Give 'em something with which to relate, tell 'em firsthand what does and doesn't work. I'm assuming of course that this doesn't get interpreted as "aiding and abetting" felons or at least "contributing" to delinquency. <joking, of course>
Have you ever fired 2 guns while jumping through the air and yelling 'YAAAAAAAA!'
